Giro Advantage / Advantage 2 - pics of the inside...?

I’ve been contemplating picking up a new aero helmet to replace my LG Chrono, and one of those on my short list in the Advantage 2. So, today I finally had the chance to check one out in person, or so I thought…

The one I tried on did not have a retention system (ie. clicker) in back. It only had an elastic-type piece. It also had different padding on the crown than the only other one (a confirmed Advantage 2) that I’ve seen. This one had thin rubber sheeting type padding on the crown, versus the velcro-ed pads that are typical.

When I asked the owner about it, he said it was a pre-production model but was certified legal. (I didn’t look for the sticker, though, since I had already handed the helmet back by that time.) Anyway…

Does anyone know where I can see pics of the inside of both the Advantage and Advantage2 to see the difference(s)?

Thanks.

Steve

I just got this helmet yesterday and it is awesome, I went for a 50 mile ride today in 85 degree weather and had no issues with overheating. It does have the rock-lock system (clicker in the back). I would deffinatley recomend picking this helmet up.

The LG rep had just stopped by Local tri store. Apparently, The new Rocket will have 3 large holes, like the Adv2, replacing the slits. Pricing is rumored to be $150. Competitive with the Giro Advantage 2. My short list is: Giro Advantage, LG Rocket and Spiuk. Spiuk is a bit more at $230, but I’ll see how it fits as to whether or not it’s worth the extra money.
The Advantage 2 I tried on was the Small and Medium. My head is 55cm so I hit the top of small and the bottom of Medium. The medium is about an inch longer and seems to transition to the back a little better, but is a bit loose even with the Roc Lock.

Can’t help you with the old Advantage but there is the Advantage2

Thanks for the pic. That is definitely not like the one I tried.

In addition to not having a size adjuster, the one in question didn’t have the two velcroed pads running from front to back. Instead, it had thin rubber sheet padding (like that covering your ear flaps) on the crown. Also, the structural foam across the forehead was notched and not smooth like on your Advantage 2.

Anyone have a similar pic of the original Advantage?

Steve

The one you saw was the original Advantage. It doesn’t have the CPSC sticker.

The front part of the “padding” has notches in it on the 2007 giro advantage model, while the cpsc 2008 model as shown is smooth. When we were searching for illegal hemlets at the chicago tri i found one of the “illegal” models. It really didn’t look near as safe (or as comfortable) as the 2008 giro advantage 2 (which i’ve got and love.) Oh, and the 08’s look way cooler too!

I also just got an advantage 2 yesterday, it is sweet, mine has a rock lock system in the back.

I think you saw an original Advantage. Here is what the older http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z73/cydswipe/MVC-009F.jpgLimar Crono looks like. It’s no longer legal for anything.

Here is the Giro Advantage…

Thanks. That’s what I needed to see.

The guy’s body language changed when I started asking about the helmet, and I believe that he was aware that he was using an illegal helmet.

Now, I guess the question becomes…

What would the forum do in this situation or in future races? What is my responsibility as a racer as far as protecting the field (ie. pointing out the cheating) and the race director (for insurance reasons)?

I really “have no dog in the fight” since we’re in different AGs and I’m pretty sure he races elite anyway.

I guess I’ll just keep an eye out for him (his bike is very unique and stands out) at future races. And, I know he reads this forum (we talked about it a bit). So, hopefully he’ll do the right thing and start wearing a legal helmet and not make an issue of it. He was a nice guy (he let a total stranger try on his helmet for sizing), so I’d rather not have to call him out.

Steve

would you call the cops if your neighbor had a tail light that was burnt out? I know rules are rules but do you think this helmet is a safety issue for other racers. Is he getting any advantage special racing advantage not afforded to others? Personally I would leave this issue alone…

I don’t see the problem, in Hawaii CE-certified helmets was allowed, Giro Advantage I is CE-certified. I thought CE-certified helmets would be allowed for all NA-events thereafter.

Dave

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Elite and Pros helmets are checked by the head official before the race. If a non CPSC helmet is then used, it’s an automatic DQ.

In IM Hawaii 2006 CE-certified helmets was allowed, it was announced one week before the race.

You’re right on one point - rules are rules. There is no “but”.

I don’t know what the small print between all the different helmet certifications, but I do know that the Advantage is an illegal helmet. Wether or not it’s a safety issue for the wearer is really irrelevant to the conversation. But, it will definitely be an issue if he is seriously injured during the race and it is discovered that his helmet was illegal. I don’t know the specifics of USAT insurance (which was required for this race) but suspect that not only will he be “in trouble” but the race director, as well. I like the race and plan on doing it again. I’d rather not have a cheater spoil it for everyone else by using an illegal helmet.

You thought wrong on the “NA-events thereafter” part. The Advantage is definitely still illegal in the vast majority of US races (IM Hawaii being one exception, there may be others). That’s why everyone was waiting for the CSPC (ie. legal) Advantage 2 to hit the shops.

I’ve never seen anyone inspecting helmets at any race I’ve done. (Probably because I stick to the local races.) Should we just not care since it’s “only” a local race? Since I have to purchase USAT insurance to race, I bet there is someone that cares.
