Giant MCR Info?

Is anyone familiar with, or had any experience with these? http://www.businessweek.com/1998/02/b3560041.htm

I can’t access the file but if you are talking about the Giant MCR, it’s another Mike Burrows creation. Apparently very aero. The BP Stealth or Corima Fox looks like sort of copies. It was state of the art but discontinued when the ICU banned the funny bikes. If I remember right, a team of MCR’s set some sort of a world championship record. Might have been 24 hrs but I can’t really remember. It’s a 73.5 seat angle but I once saw one at a tri fitted with a forward seat post.

Corima Fox came out at about the same time ('96). I would say that actually, the Giant MCR is an upside down copy of the Lotus, as Burrows designed both bikes.

Burrows is trying to come out with a hybrid of the monoblade Lotus and the MCR. I don’t know if this is coming to fruition or not.

Finding an MCR on Ebay would be a treat, albeit an expensive one. I passed on one for $1700 at half price (new), and I kick myself every one in awhile. But my Fox is one hell of a ride.

E mail me at velobunny@aol.com and I will forward you a pic.

Don’t know if it is still there but I saw a MCR on ebay or roadbikereview.com last week I believe
.

This one was just posted on eBay. Looks sweet. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2716738265&category=7298

Thank you for the link! I am now the proud new owner of the Giant MCR2!

Congrats. A good bike at a good price.

I was interested in the MCR at one point, but everyone I asked who had actually ridden one complained that it suffered from poor execution of a potentially fine design. They reported that the potential killer aps it offered, aero shape and carbon material, were undermined by a wimpy lack of stiffness in the bottom bracket that soaked up energy.

But that’s just what I heard. Maybe it was a great bike that was essentially killed off by UCI rule changes.

I still have my Giant MCR2 and it works great. It is a beautiful bike and fast.

I had one for a few years. It’s a fun bike to have. Head turning guaranteed. Aero wise, it didn’t feel particularly different than my other bikes, though. Plus a bit noisy. Too bad Giant doesn’t make them any more.

I raced on one (actually 2 as the first one was stolen) for about 5 years. It was very comfortable, extremely aero, a little heavy (especially w/stock wheels), fairly slack geometry. The rear brake was a PITA to adjust, otherwise, it was easy to wrench. My only complaint was high speed wobble on chip seal roads. I changed the fork, positioning, wheels, stem and never could totally eliminate it. It only occurred at 40+mph, but it scared the hell out of me at both Wildflower and IMC as well as some local long descents. With no top tube to press against, it was impossible to eliminate. If it did not have this issue, I would still be racing on it.
