Getting glue off of tires, (not rims)

I’m reglueing a set of wheels. what’s the best way of getting the excess glue off of some tubular tires. I’ve cleaned the rim with paint stripper but it probably isn’t a good idea to use chemicals on the tire right?

ran a search and read Dan’s article’s but didn’t find the answer.

No not a good idea at all as most solvents can compromise the integrity of the tire. Best thing you can do is remove most of the bigger pieces by hand.

How about the Orange stuff (goo-off)?

watch out on doing that, the fabric base tape on the tire is usually glued to the tire with contact cement so any type of adhesive might weaken that bond as well. Personally I’ve never scraped much of the excess glue off the tires even reglueing 3-4 times or more. If there are big globs I might pick it off by hand or I guess you could even slice them off with a razor knife… Throw some extra glue on there and pump that tire up to high psi on the rim and it seems to just smash everything flat.

okay, last option, using contact cement THINNER (barges thinner is great) doesn’t seem to weaken the glue but just soften and actually kind of reactivate it. Maybe try some of that in a light coat not getting a ton o the base taple
