Getting a Wired Power Tap to Work

Bought a wired powertap and now I’m struggling to get this thing to work. I have the ‘sharkfin’ wired sensor and the instructions are not clear if it has a cadence sensor or not, wheel speed sensor and how exactly does the hub communicate? I had a few seconds of signal but that’s it. Any pointers? I thought this should have been pretty straight forward.

Fresh batteries in hub and LYC are a good place to start.

Sharkfin is somewhat sensitive to location relative to hub. Zip tie it on with a bit of slack so you can adjust position, then cinch it tight when you’re satisfied.
May need to clean contacts on the computer mount.

have you installed the sensor on your bike? y’know, in a somewhat permanent fashion using the zip-ties? if not, read this. i have done it several times and these are the best instructions. the only thing i can add is to put new batteries in head-unit and hub prior to starting. might as well do it before you trouble shoot. if you have installed it, then the answers to these questions:

if it has a cadence sensor … wheel speed sensor

are, “you do if you installed them”. if you didn’t install them then you will use the virtual functions of the PT. and that’s fine.
the answer to the last question, “… how exactly does the hub communicate”, is by get them close enough to talk.

in my experience, the most critical part was getting the little yellow computer (lyc) DEEPLY seated in the craddle. its harder than you think. it can slide forward just a millimeter and you’ll lose connection.

anyway, good luck. the LYC is great.

Thanks everyone, I just had to move the sensor closer to the wheel and then voila I had power & speed readings. Unfortunately it’s too far from the pedal to pick up the cadence magnet. I’ll just put my GSC10 back on and use my watch for cadence.

The wired one I used to have would pick up cadence based on the power inputs (i.e. would figure out cadence based on ‘surges’ in power as you pedal) or had a separate cadence sensor from the fin that could also be installed. For me, the calculated cadence seemed to be accurate enough for what I needed

This unit may very well do that, I’m pretty new to this. Not even sure which model I have. Thanks
