Gett'in the stink out?

Any ideas on how to wash the workout stink out of some of the newer type fabrics? The polyester type stuff like dri-fit, dry-release, etc. I see some stuff in the Performance catalog…but there has got to be a cheaper way!

I try to wash every 3-4 days and when I take it off I lay it out so it will dry and not be balled up with sweat for several days and that seems to work for me.

Yeah…I do what I’m supposed to do. Dry it after a workout or a wash on a drying rack. But, after a couple of years of workouts they are good for about a 15 min run. I don’t notice the stank until after the w.o. - Gotta be a way to clean that out!

Another thing I learned on this or another form use powered soap and no fabric softner.

Let em soak. I wash all my gear together and let it all soak in fairly heavily detergenated (is that a word?) water for an hour or more. After the soak, I let the machine run a full (delicate) cycle, then I drip dry. No problesm with stinkiness here. Clothes that is. My wife says I am one stinky bastard. Something about sweaty feet and flatulence!

wash it in warmish water on a heavy soak wash.

then throw it in the dryer on delicates (low heat) with 2 dryer sheets.

Haven’t had a problem with them smelling.

(at least until i workout in them…:P)

When home, unless I’m really muddy, I wear my gear (except socks) INTO the post-run / ride shower; give everything a good soap down and disrobe IN the shower. I let everything air-dry on the towel rack or curtain rod. When people look down the hall into my bathroom, they KNOW some sort of athlete lives there, and he’s a slob!!!

After 2 years of workouts in them, even with regular clean I think that “funk” is stuck. Its become part of the fabric

I played ice hockey for a few years, I wore a long sleeve shirt (cotton and Under Armour styff) under my pads. After games/pratice I took it off it was completely soaked, then I took it out and let it dry afterwards. After a couple of years, that thing reeks after about a 20 minute workout like you described. No matter how its washed, it still stinks. Shoot you should smell my hockey gloves, after a year of not playing, washing them and letting them dry. They still stink like none other after 5 minutes.

I hand wash my workout clothes in the shower as well. Once a week or so I’ll run them through the washer with a regular load of laundry (but never the dryer!).

Not only does the immediate hand-wash do a great job regulating stank (no chance to build up) but it also greatly prolongs the life of those expensive cycling clothes…

If you’ve got some gear with a permanent stink colony, you might try a good long soak with Mirazyme, a great enzymatic wetsuit de-stanker available at your local scuba shop.
