He smoked the field, winning by 19seconds to take his second consecutive Junior XC Championship. He’s a total badass.

Great race for him but not the performance of the day (by an American distance runner)…Shalane Flanagan runs 14:47.62 for an indoor 5k American Record, #4 performer of all-time. Smashes the old AR by nearly 20secs!!
wow on both accounts. I hope that Shalane is coming to Carlsbad for the 5000 in April. She would have a shot at the world road record on the course here.
Yes, he is a badass, but let’s be honest here.
Fernandez, Derrick and Puskedra could be the best young distance trio, ever for the US.
With that in mind, those three demolished the field. There was a major gap between 3rd and 4th. This was a qualifying race for Worlds, so the goal would just be qualifying (in my opinion), so I wouldn’t put too much stock in the time gaps between the first 3.
You’ve got a guy who ran 3:56, one at 13:44 and the last, if I"m not mistaken, hasn’t opened yet this season. (may be focusing on Worlds?)
Oh , and they’re all 18
I hope everyone can appreciate all of them!
Eric
I hope they pan out. Hall, Webb, and Ritz were all in the same class. All have made olympic teams, and 2 have set major US records. Pretty good class and still more to come.

23:20 ain’t bad ![]()
Having had achilles issues in the past, I really hope he’s figured out the root cause of that. Tendonitis can be so devestating to an athlete.
which runner ran 13 44?
Derrick opened indoors with that last week at UW.
And he put nearly the full 19sec gap in the final 2k. Not to mention he dropped a 356 indoor mile in his first track race of the year.
And he’s just over 18.
Yes, they are all studs. I believe Fernandez and Derrick are right around the same age, too.
Eric
These kids could be wearing red, white, and blue again this summer and I don’t mean for the junior team. Hopefully they can stay healthy.
Boston Indoor Games is on ESPN right now, until 6pm EST…Flanagan’s AR and men’s mile still to be shown.
fernandez is a phenom. A few weeks ago he broke the junior world record in the indoor mile at 3:56:XX. It was his first ever indoor track meet and one of his first races since the ncaa champs in which he injured his achilles.
