Genius at work

news report two days ago.

Man tried to commit suicide by crucifix. He nailed two large boards together, then nailed one hand to the cross with a three inch spike. He then realized his plan had a flaw…

that’s a guy that needs a helping hand…

I wouldn’t lend him one…doesn’t sound like a stand up guy to me…all that hanging around doing nothing. Although it is a Darwin award in the making.

Typical.

Of what? Being a fanatical weirdo? Sure. Of someone being from some kind of religous faith? Careful now.

Hoo-boy.

Buckle up, everyone.

I wasn’t in any way trying to instigate/revive religion threads…just wanted to make a point that not all (typical) religous people would do something so stupid. I respect Tom and his opinions far too much to get into theological debates with him. It may be a free speech board…but it’s a triathlon board. And so it should remain.

I meant weirdo. Sorry.

To keep it on a triathlon level do you guys feel if he would have worked on his flexability and his toe strength, could he have held the hammer with a foot a proceeded to hammer the other nail with the foot. I think core strength would have come into play here also. A lightweight titanium hammer would help also. But what type of titanium hammer would be best? It would have to be light weight and provide the crushing power that would be needed. Now picturing this situation I would have to think that the proper placement of the first hand would be crucial for the guy to get to the finish before dehydrating from loss of fluids (fit is everything), So I would probably recomend hydrating before starting and properly measuring the boards for placement of the hands and should helmets be required for this?

I think a hollow handled ti hammer with the weight in the head, maybe even offset so the majority of the weight is in the head. Possibly mate it to a carbon fiber handle to improve striking comfort and shock absorbtion.

OK, this has gone beyond absurd. Have you no concept of what is appropriate?

A lightweight hammer would make this nearly impossible. In order to be effective, a hammer needs to have sufficient mass. We’re not talking about driving finishing nails here. Granted it would be more challenging to accurately swing a heavier hammer with one’s foot, but this is a feat requiring strength and skill. One would assume that one would have to train sufficiently to adequately accomplish this. So I think equipment is key here. I’d focus on balance, grip, and vibration dampening. It would definitely have to be custom built.

Being the problem solver that I am, I would have hammered the nails through the back of the cross, so that the pointed ends came through the front. Then all you have to do is bang the backs of your hands against the points, and presto, crusifiction.

“Sometimes you just have to think outside of the box.” Book of Monty, Chapter 3, Verse 9

Monty, I was just thinking that these guys are trying to do a Tri with a road bike when you answered. Pretty much what I would have said except the nails should be titanium.

I love this board.
