Excellent! Lets appoint a felon to oversee the treasury! Nice job Big O. I’ll bet the farm that next year we have more people cheating on their taxes as apparently compliance with the law and tax code is no longer that big a deal. What is good enough for Secretary Geithner should be good enough for Joe the plummer. Is Secreatry Geithner and his Department of Treasury going to take a hard line and go after tax cheats? Nice work Big O!
Predictable Pedalsaurus. Most people don’t even know who the treasury secretary is, let alone pay their taxes because he does…
The dems are very close to a juggernaut right now, and I don't see the pubs putting all their (limited) might into this issue. I saw a poll that showed a majority of those who knew about Geithner, opposed his confirmation. Screaming bloody murder is probably as much as the pubs can or will do on many issues, and it probably was somewhat effective here. Obama loses a little cachet between this and the couple of lobbyists he brought on-board.
Predictable Pedalsaurus. Most people don’t even know who the treasury secretary is, let alone pay their taxes because he does… I’m glad they confirmed Geithner because it means if I cheat on my taxes, I have met the ethical standard set by the Obama administration. I told you people that you had elected another Richard Nixon. Maybe now some of you - the smarter ones - are beginning to see the light. Or maybe it’s going to take another year or two of slime before you finally get it.
So lets see - he was confirmed by the Senate Finance committee last week - with considerable support of the republicans (orin Hatch for example) - and was confirmed by the senate in a 60-34 vote - which means a good chunk of pubs voted for him. So while I grant you the right to diss Obama for putting him up and/or not vetting him properly - how do you account for all your precious republicans supporting him. The could have killed this if so desired - even without a majoiryt they could have easily made this such a political hot potato it would have died before confirmation…
Put up or shut up
From Byron York:
“Republicans have decided not to fight. One key Senate Republican told me last week that members of the minority party have just so much ammunition, and using it against a cabinet official who serves at the pleasure of the president is not as wise as saving it to use against, say, a judicial nominee seeking a lifetime appointment to the bench. While that is good news for conservatives who hope Republicans will fight if Barack Obama nominates a series of liberals to the federal courts of appeals, it also helps create a new standard in which tax problems which would surely have disqualified any past nominee will now be acceptable in a Treasury Secretary. The “Gosh, I don’t really know why I didn’t pay my taxes” defense will now have the imprimatur of the man who oversees the Internal Revenue Service.”
No doubt some Republicans will vote against Geithner; five GOP senators voted against him in the Finance Committee. But even if all 41 Senate Republicans were to vote against him — which would never happen — the Democrats’ large majority in the Senate and apparently unanimous support for Geithner guarantees that he will be Treasury Secretary Geithner by this evening.
Because Republicans are lying cowards? Only feel powerful when they blow things up or prevent gays from marrying? Don’t have the balls to fight for what they say they believe in?

Now you know how I felt when Gonzales was confirmed as Attny. Gen. Where was your post that day on what a sleaze bag he was? Or did that come after he got the boot? Hopefully he will get arrested, tried and sent to prison where he can feel what it’s like to be tortured, er loved.
i’m OK with that as well. There are shitty nominees on both sides. But the confirmation process is a freaking joke. Why bother having it if is just a rubber stamp. At least some folks seem to pay attention when you are talking about judges.
Make no mistake. This is a failure of the Republican party. Very disappointing.
