Geithner apologizes for not paying taxes

See the AP news story.

Excellent, maybe next time one of you guys gets audited a simple apology for not paying taxes will suffice!

There now, that makes it all better…

Nice to see he is setting the example for all of us to follow.

Don’t pay taxes
apologize
it’s all good.

Seems to me there are two possibilities here.

Either he didn’t know that he owed the taxes and therefore doesn’t understand our treasury system at the most rudimentary level.

…or, he knew that he owed the taxes and chose to try to avoid paying them. In that case he’s lacking the moral character that we should expect of our Secretary of the Treasury.

In either case, he should be disqualified for this particular job.

Actually, he would be assessed interest and penalties like everyone else. The apology was not in-lieu of those.

I know you are trying to make a political point but it is misleading.

My point is the guy is either a crook or fiscally retarded. In either respect he is not qualified for the job the Big O wants him for. he should do us all a favor and step away from the nomination and also pay his taxes w9with penalties and interest) and/or go to jail.

The guy is a filthy tax cheat and he is going to be the head tax collector? What is much more serious is that Geithner, while neglecting to pay his taxes, accepted compensation from his employer, the IMF, intended to offset the taxes he hadn’t paid. It is difficult to understand how Geithner could accept repayment for his taxes while unaware that he owed the taxes for which he was being repaid. But as long as he apologizes that makes it ok. Pres. Obama should make another pick.

He paid interest too. Not sure about any penalties.

My problem is that it appears he used TurboTax to file his return. That program would have calculated his taxes properly unless he did not include it when prompted or overrode the calculation.

I find it hard to believe that he simply goofed on this. It seems more likely that he tried to avoid paying those taxes. If that is true, he should step down.

did you ask for the resignation of gonzales? talk about retarded or a liar!

As I know from friends who work there, the tax consequences of working at the IMF and World Bank are not at all “rudimentary.” The tax aspects are quite different from working for the federal govt or a private entity. Still, Geithner should have figured out those tax issues and he certainly should have repaid what he owed for 2001 and 2002 after his 2003/04 audit, rather than wait until the Obama team figured out the error.
