The California State Automobile Association said today that the average price for a gallon of gas in the nine-county San Francisco Bay area is now $1.84 a gallon a 34 cent increase since last month.

An association spokesman said San Francisco has the highest average price for unleaded self-serve gas of any major American city at $1.90 a gallon.

Santa Rosa has the lowest average gas price in the Bay area at $1.78 a gallon.

The most expensive gas in a mid-sized U.S. city may be in Eureka, Calif., according to the report which said gas there is averaging $2 a gallon.

A spokesman says oil prices will probably remain above $30 a barrel until OPEC’s March 27 meeting in Vienna, when the cartel is expected to increase crude production.

The association advises motorists to conserve gas by driving less, driving at a moderate, steady speed, keeping vehicles in good condition and buying the right grade of fuel.
