Garmin Workouts

Three questions on Garmin workouts.

  1. For the following example workout: Interval - 2min, 250-255 watt’s…Recovery - 2mn, None watt’s. When doing this workout does it always base it off of current power or can you do it off of 30s or 3s average?

  2. I noticed that there is power zones. (I have never trained with power) Is it typical to create power zones based on FTP similar to how I create HR zones based off of LTHR

  3. When workouts are completed and uploaded to the computer does it just show what was done, or does it show what was done along with what the workout specified?

Can I get the data and workout displayed like the example below? where the workout is in blue and what was done is shown by the colored lines.

First I have a question, what Garmin do you have?

  1. Pace yourself with average power, but don’t base yourself on it. Try to keep average power within a range of the amount you’re targeting. Depending on your Garmin, you can set up “lap power” to be displayed. Before the interval hit the lap button and it will display the average power for the interval. I typically use this to pace my efforts.

  2. It is typical to create power zones based off FTP. Different coaching methods/authors/plans use different metrics but typically there will be 5-6 zones. Recovery, Endurance, Tempo, Threshold, Vo2 max, Maximal power are an example of one. I suggest picking up some books to learn how to create those power zones, or simply input your FTP into WKO/Power Agent and it will calculate zones for you.

  3. The program you have there I am not familiar with. I typically use WKO+ or Power Agent, which do not show gridlines on the workout you are supposed to do. With either WKO or Power Agent you can however, select the interval time frame and see what the power was for the duration of the interval.

I’d like to know too. I’m trying to write some stuff to .tcx and it would be great if I could specify target wattages.

I don’t think it supports it though looking at the xsd. There is a lot there though so I could be missing something.
