Garmin vs. Joule

Garmin seems to get most of the love, but it appears to lack most functions offered by the Joule regarding power metrics.

What’s the story?

What does the joule do that the Garmin doesn’t?

What does the joule do that the Garmin doesn’t?

I don’t think Garmin shows IF, TSS, 10 min power, 20 min power, etc.

Garmin simply shows avg power

Or am I wrong?

you are wrong.

however, I’ve never had a joule “drop data” or have a corrupt file.
I hear that from garmin people all the time.

the joule does have some it’s own issues though. the non gps one anyway, I haven’t used the GPS one.

such as: can’t recharge the battery, not a good way to start a new interval at a TT start, isn’t always clear if rides are really cleared from the device or not, isn’t clear what low battery indicators are talking about (head unit, or power meter?)

Garmin shows current or average power, plus HR, cadence, time, and their own calculation using IF, TSS & HR called Training effect. Not sure what value knowing the extra metrics you mentioned during an activity would be.

I use the Joule GPS and I like it a lot. It tells me everything I need to know. Also, when it’s a low battery it says “Joule battery low” for the unit itself. My only complaints are shorter battery life than Garmin, and when initially setting up, it is a pain to get your data pages organized on the unit itself. DC Rainmaker informed me, however, that you can use the power agent for this and it simplifies things ten fold.

Also, to stop a ride you have to put the unit in stand by manually. Not a big deal in races, but if you drive to a ride, if you forget to put it in stand by it will record your drive and you have to manually edit it out.

Overall, I like it better than the Garmin 500 I had that died on me, and it can be had cheap on fleabay. I got mine for $60.
