Garmin Forerunner

I’ve already got a Polar S710 so the whole Timex S+D HRM thing has appeal to me but this looks kind of cool

http://www.garmin.com/products/forerunner201/
.

One of my running buddies is jonesin’ for one too. He’ll probably wind up with one before x-mas. I will post a report as soon as I can.

… I have not seen proof of this (so, take my post for what it’s worth), but the device is being recalled. Something about condensation under the display. NO proof - only hearsay.

As a side note, the only advantage I see over the Timex-Garmin BodyLink is that the Garmin is Waterproof (not just resistant). Other than that, it doesn’t seem to have the ability to include the HRM in a downloadable format. Nor is it upgradeable in modules. You can upgrade the S+D and/or the HRM. The Timex seems to allow for more flexibility when it comes to upgrading without obsolescence. I’d be interested to see what the biggest difference is… But, with the Garmin Forerunner receiver obviously smaller, I predict it’s only a matter of time before Timex will offer a waterproof smaller version of it’s receiver.

When it comes to wireless devices, it seems like it’s all good news to me.

timex has a new smaller reciever coming out that has better battery life. It should be out soon. It’s even shown in the catalogs but didn’t show up with the actual product. That being said, the Garmin looks cool based on the fact that it’s not all that big and much nicer than wearing the timex reciever all the time. But yeah, a heart rate monitor would be a cool add on. Sunto makes one, only $700 or so though, speed+distance+HR all in a big watch.

… I have not seen proof of this (so, take my post for what it’s worth), but the device is being recalled. Something about condensation under the display. NO proof - only hearsay. It is just a rumour. I emailed Garmin and here is their response: Thank you for contacting GARMIN International. The Forerunner 201
has
not been recalled. If we were ever to recall a product we would make
and
public announcement on our website what the unit was being recalled
for.
This is what happens when people start rumors. Thank you for coming to
the
source for the information.

I’m going to buy one. It’s less than half the cost of the bodylink system and I don’t need another HR monitor. It looks like it has some cool extra features as well. I’ll let you guys know what I think.

Thanks for clarifying that… I had a feeling it may not be correct since I couldn’t find collaborating evidence.

I agree with Jayblack, I have a HRM that I like and paid good money for, I don’t need another HRM. The timex is cool but is over $300 for the entire system, I can get the Forerunner for christmas. If I was looking for a HRM and S/D I would probably go with the timex.
