Garmin Forerunner 305 and Powertap ssl2.4 chest strap

This is an incredibly specific question, but does anyone have these two devices and do the HRM straps work interchangeably? I thought they should as I read something about it and they look identical, even the writing on the back is the same with the exception of an imprint in the plastic, one says ‘IR’ and the other ‘JR’. I bought the garmin in part to make my running computer and cycling computer play nice together.

Any experience out there?

Nope…they don’t work interchangeably. If I’m wearing the PT cheststrap and the Garmin 305 on my wrist, I get no heart rate reading on the 305.

damn, thanks though. looks like we have some gear in common, i also have a kuota and just sold a cervelo.

It has been reported that the newest versions of PT heart strap and the 305 work together.

The key is that both devices must use ANT low power wireless networking. If you flip over your Cycleops heart monitor and it has “ANT +sport” logo, you have a chance.

It sounds like you have downlevel versions, thus no.

i have the ant+ version of both :frowning:
.

You have both as ANT+?

Sorry that I don’t have both (I have an older 201 and my ANT+ Powertap). However, this sounds like it should work. LT on the Wattage mailing list has stated that they work perfectly together.

I would check out the following:

  1. Download the latest firmware for your Garmin from their website.
  2. Validate in the manual that there is NOT a discover process for the Garmin.
  3. Then call Garmin and ask if there is a discovery process.

ANT has the ability to hook up to something like 256 seperate devices, however, it has a discover process in the protocol. On the Powertap, you press both buttons and get “find.” Then it finds local devices. You may want to try this with your Garmin heart strap on. It should find it.

You’ll need to see if there discovery process for the Cycleops strap for the Garmin ala the manual or the call to tech support at Garmin.

great thanks, ill get right on it.

i just rechecked that they dont work the way everything is set up now and that is in fact the case.

youre a lifesaver, or at least a biofeedback gadgetry saver.

if anyone else has the same issue this is what you do

go to the setup menu on your PT by holding both buttons. go to menu 5, cycle through until you get to HS-learn menu, wear your garmin strap, hold ‘select’ until it starts searching. this should pair your garmin strap to the PT. (theoretically you should be able to pair 2 straps but i couldnt figure that out) once you have the ID number, you can make the switch between the two straps on the configure device menu on the PT software with the device connected and in HOST mode.

to do the same on the garmin go to settings/general/accessories/HRM/restart scan - this will pair the garmin to the PT chest strap.

in short, they are interchangeable, but only when paired. so, ill use one and have a spare in case it breaks.

Dude, that’s huge!! Thanks!! I’m gonna try that ASAP.

I have an Edge 305 and Powertap SL 2.4 and one heart rate strap works for both. I don’t know if the strap for the Forerunner is different than the Edge.

I use a Forerunner 305 and a Edge 305 with one heart strap. This works perfect for triathlons, but I don’t know if they would work with a Power Tap unit. What I want to see is SRM and Garmin get together and make a bike unit with power, heart, cadence, gps data. Tim

They just announced this at Eurobike. I hope you have some cash set aside…
