What is sort of surprising is that if I turn on the unit in one of these “bad GPS” locations and then ride off while it’s getting a lock, it continues to struggle to get satellite lock, even when I ride to a good location.
This is consistent with my experience as well. The two times I started it about 10 seconds before going outside it never got a lock. I even powered it down and restarted it mid-run and it didn’t help.
I would turn it on a few minutes before you head out on your ride and put it next to a window. Get ready for your ride and then it’ll be locked in for the ride. I had this same problem and that was one of DC Rainmaker’s suggestions. Works great. It also seems that once it gets locked in that first time then subsequent attempts at locating GPS satellites are a lot faster. But living in a large city with tall buildings and alleys will always be tough for most GPS units.
Do you or anyone know if the basic Edge 500 can pick up ‘hub’ cadence (imputed) from a PT hub vs. adding a separate cadence sensor to the bike? My old wired PT and simple PT CPU had a ‘crank’ or ‘hub’ cadence option. Crank was from a sensor and solid but required a different harness; hub was estimated from torque f(omega) … not super solid but good enough for me.
thx!
Yes, if you have a ANT+ PowerTap the Garmin 500 will display the cadence values from the PT hub. Same with crank based power meters, no need for a magnet on your crank arm.
