Garmin Cust Service Rocks

So I called Garmin about my unit flying out of the Quick Release mount and shattering, and they said they will send me a refurbished model to replace it. Rock on. I just have to send in the remaining parts of my old one (good thing I went back and picked up what was left - only 1/2 of the original unit).

FYI, I also called Costco about getting a receipt for my unit (I couldn’t find mine), and they said they’d also send me a new one if I wanted. I decided to go with the Garmin refurb b/c I felt bad asking Costco for a new Garmin since it wasn’t their fault in any way.

I’ve had good experiences with them in the past as well.

I’ve got to ask though why do you think he unit came out of the mount? Design flaw or user error? I ask because I use the mount for my Forerunner 305 and want to know if I should be concerned.

Good question.

I just went over to my bike to replay the incident.

I was using the wrist strap, and had the garmin wrapped around my hand. I do this until I get going, then I wrap it around my wrist.

When I hit the bump, the unit absorbed some force from the side. It looks like it was not designed to accommodate force in this direction.

Try this. Mount your unit in the wrist strap. If you try to pull it out from the top or bottom, it’s pretty solid. Now yank it from the side. Mine pops right out.

So the lesson is, they designed the unit to stay put if it gets jostled in the vertical plane. Anything from the side can dislodge it.
