Garmin Connect vs. Training Peaks

I’ve tried the search function, but my Google-fu isn’t really up to snuff.

I’m wondering what the benefits are to switching from Connect to TP. I don’t ride with power, and do sprints and olys. I don’t have any realistic plans to move up in distance and have no delusions of grandeur on my placing in any event I do.

I’m currently focusing on building volume from a few months of inactivity, but once I get what I think is an acceptable weekly volume under my belt, I’d like to get more focused on speeding up, but that’s at least a year away.

I basically use Connect to track my volume and progress as it relates to my recovery.

Any advice or insight from those that are more experienced?

Thanks,

my experience, TP is way better for PLANNING. If it’s just about tracking what you HAVE DONE, then I think there’s not too much difference. However, if you want to do any sort of planning, then TP slays Connect.

Like, a pretty basic thing, I would think is, “I have a race in X weeks, how do I want to prepare - roughly - each week?” That you cannot do with any sort of ease (IN MY EXPERIENCE; I could be totally wrong here though) in Connect. But it’s super simple to do that in TP.

Thanks Jordan - this is exactly what I needed to know.

Currently, my schedule is pretty static with respect to what I’m doing and how much. I’m at a certain volume now, and am building to more with a focus not getting worn down.

Once I actually have to schedule builds, tapers, etc. into my training, I’ll look into this again.

One other thing to consider is that Garmin Connect will sync automatically with training peaks (as well as strava, my fitness pal, etc.). So the best of both worlds is to use Training Peaks or some other planning site to set your workout and race calendar (or have it set by your coach) and then use GC to track and upload your actual workouts to them. If you have a new device such as the 220, 620, or 920 this can be done wirelessly. Older devices will work but require you to download by connecting to a PC.

sdbanker makes a great point. If you ever, at some point, think you’ll want the planning and performance monitoring capabilities set up a free TrainingPeaks account (and set up HR and pace zones) and start syncing your data to TrainingPeaks today. At some point down the road when you decide to use TP having the history already uploaded will help you or a coach plan and measure progress much more effectively.

Also, if you would like to take a peak at the TrainingPeaks Premium DM me and I can give you a code for 14 days free and if you like it swing a 20% off for your first year.

I’m still learning about the Performance Management Chart (PMC), but I have noticed a huge benefit in using this to track my fitness levels, energy, and recovery.

A lot of the guys on these forums are expert in this stuff, MotoGuy just crushed his first Ironman and his posts about PMC are really interesting to me.

I agree with Rappstar, the ability to plan ahead is critical - and I find the premium membership of TP to be VERY worth it!

That is why I urged him to start syncing data now. Even if he never looks at it in TP for a year if/when he does start using it the historical data will give a good reference for moving forward and the PMC will light up with all the data already in the system giving a good reference and starting point.

This is exactly what I have done and I’m about to take the leap to the Premium TP plan. For me things I enjoy with TP is the weekly TSS score which allows me to ensure I am aware of how hard I’ve been pushing any given week. With the different “phases” to a workout plan (Build, Push, Taper) it is an easy way to see if I’m within my set targets. I also enjoy the notifications when thresholds have changed and an increase is in order. All of this can be helpful with recovery and knowing when that next “intense” sessions is around the corner which allows for mental preparation. Lastly having nutrition tracking integration with MyFitnessPal (both Connect and TP have this) is also a good way to keep the full picture in one place.

I was not aware of this option. Do you have a link as to how to do it please?

Few things to note, by default it will not sync any historical data but you can select the option to sync the last 30 days.

Thanks for the reply. I did find out how. Pretty sure I checked the historical 30 day option
But it did not do it.

Another question. In the past I have done a bulk upload of historical data. However l only seem tlo be able to find files upto end of January 2014. Is there anything differdnt about Ant upload that you know of after this date?
You may be the wrong person to ask -it. may bd Garmin.
Bty I never changed to Garmkn Express.

That’s a Garmin question, the ANT+ agent copies the file to the PC. Did you change devices or re-pair the device?

As for the 30 day history I’ve heard it can take a while based on load on the Garmin servers but I never tried it

Thanks for answering.
I have solved it and yoju are correct, l changed devices due to altimeter problems

Does this apply to Basic and Premium TP? I just joined last week, and I’m still learning how to use it. Don’t see anything regarding planning- could very well be oversight on my part.

Edit: Scratch that. I see it is a Premium feature!

Did you solve the sync issue? Mine is the same. I checked to upload the 30 days of GC history, and it didn’t work.

Mine still hasn’t uploaded from yesterday; however, I broke down and read the FAQ and it states that it won’t download the history until after you download your first workout. Then it could take up to 24 hours.

I’ll keep you posted.

I just uploaded my morning swim workout. That came over to TP instantaneously. My other workouts for the past 30 days… not so much.

Is there a way to set-up the synch so that workouts drop into the planned sessions for that day. Right now, it created duplicate entries.

It should’t be creating a duplicate, it should, just like when you upload via Device Agent or drag and drop, drop into the planned workout.

The last 30 days just hit - so it looks like you have to be more patient than I was.
