Garmin 705 Setup Help

Trying to setup Garmin 705 on a PC running Vista 32. I have followed the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=perrVMJT0Gg. But it turns out that I don’t even have all of the folders in the Garmin unit. The Garmin has only two folders in it, neither of which is remotely involved with the custom mapping.

I assume my problem is with the drivers. So I’ve tried to update the drivers repeatedly. The exe file will not complete itself. Garmin has a proposed work around and that also is not working (manual install of drivers). I’m not sure where to get the native drivers? All I really have is the exe file.

I have another problem in that I’m not sure which programs to use? I have the sporttracks downloaded, but I need a sort of recipie style approach to getting this thing going. I’ve found some helpful stuff on ST but either because of my driver install problems or some other probllem, I’m thus far unable to move forward.

Thanks in advance.

pretty please?

I sort of have the same problem and gave up on windows but i can do that since i am running windows in parallels on my mac.

The installation never completes. It just hangs on the part that says connect the garmin and wait 20 secs. Not sure if that where it hangs on you, but i gave up and just mount it on the mac side and browse to it using parallels shared folders.

That is exactly my problem! I bet Garmin is still living in the pre-vista dark ages… Anyone solve this? (I know someone on here has solved it…)

I was using windows 2000 sp4, since windows is only for WKO+. So you can add that to the list of OS’s having problems.

It’s got to be an easy fix. I tried the usual trick of “run as administrator.” I also tried to play around with the device manager (I think I listed that in the OP.) Damn this is irritating!

how about contacting Garmin. Their customer service is pretty good.

Check out the forums at http://forums.motionbased.com . They have a forum of nothing but Garmin troubleshooting.

I have to wait until tomorrow afternoon. Of course I wanted to do this all day today but I was stuck in meetings. And meetings all morning again!

ooo, this looks promising…

I’ve had no issues with my Edge 705 and Vista. I just installed the USB drivers and it works fine.

I don’t think this is a vista problem anymore. I think it’s user error. It could be due to my security programs. Or maybe I just have no idea what I’m doing…okay the last is true.

Can someone confirm that the youtube video that I linked is exactly how the maps uploading works? I can’t even find the folder to put my maps into. Did Garmin change the software after that guy made the video or am I doing something wrong?

According to Garmin I am the problem and there was nothing wrong to begin with. Just a couple things that I learned:

  1. DO NOT BUY the mini-SD card from Garmin. Do not buy the deluxe version of the software. The only reason to buy that card is if you hate computers and computer-based mapping and making routes and doing things the easy way. But if you are on ST you probably don’t hate computers.

  2. BUY THE DVD MAPS

  3. MapSource doesn’t work until you get some maps uploaded with the coupon code. This is a hassle but you have to do it.

  4. DL maps into the GPX folder.
