Garmin 510/quarq Riken - am I missing something

My wife is training for IM Boulder and has been doing her bike training inside. Her coach has known that she has been on the trainer but has asked why her rides only show a tenth of a mile. Of course we all know the garmin connects with the sats but am I missing something towards getting distance measured on the trainer?

You are missing the part where you turn OFF the GPS part. GPS takes precedence over a cadence/speed sensor

Maybe he thinks she has the garmin speed and cadence sensor on her bike which would then show mileage on the 510 via the ant=+ and magnet
.

Yeah I don’t think she has that. Just the quarq which gives all the details but doesn’t translate into distance traveled, correct?

I would seriously question as to why her coach even cares about distance on the trainer. Trainer rides are all about time and intensity. Distance means basically nothing…or maybe 0.1…so I’d say her Garmin reading is pretty accurate.

With a crank based pm like the Riken, you do have a magnet next to the bottom bracket which gives you the cadence. On the trainer, turn your GPS off and just tell the coach you won’t travel far with the drive wheel off the ground… you don’t need a speed/cadence sensor with a Quart as it will override. By the way, great combo with the Riken and 510.

THIS. She has a damn power meter - speed and distance are completely irrelevant, especially on the trainer. Does her coach have experience working with power data and designing workouts for power?

Correct. If she doesn’t have a ANT+ Speed sensor (or, a ANT+ Speed/Cadence sensor), she won’t get speed, and thus won’t get distance. The Quarq only transmits cadence, not speed. Whereas a PowerTap does actually transmit both (though, cadence is somewhat estimated).

If you happen to leave GPS on while indoors, but do have the ANT+ speed sensor, it will actually record the speed track from the sensor, even sitting still in your house.

I will agree with others though, that distance/speed indoors is completely useless. And I’d be very concerned about any coach asking for that data.

let me ask a dumb question: I have a 510 and can’t seem to figure out how to turn off the gps. Not that distance is important; when I download to garmin connect, the map looks like a hospital heart monitor! I have scrolled all through the screens and can’t find an indoor selection or a GPS off mode. My garmin 610 watch has an option for “indoor mode”. Please advise

  1. When the unit turns on, tap the screen once.
  2. Press the little radiating icon on the second row on the left side (sorta looks like WiFi)
  3. Tap the top row for GPS.
  4. Select GPS Mode = Off.
  5. Done.

thank you DC
