I wonder how much and when we actually will be able to buy one.
Looks like $349 and this summer.
So it is the size of the 305 it looks like, but can go from water, to bike, to run. . so no need for a 705 unless someone wants the mapping.
What is the downside to the 310XT?
So still not like a watch but with the waterproofing and battery life that should have been included in the 305. So happy I held out for something that is not a vast improvement for more than double the Costco price.
I would say it is a vast improvement. Waterproof and ANT+ compatible for those of us with powermeters or getting powermeters. Plus the 20 hour battery life. … .
I don’t see how the 305 can do what the 310 will do.
Looks like ANT+ wireless transfer to your computer. On the fly changing of VP. Better HR strap. Power compatible. 20HR battery all look great. Looks a little smaller too!

Definitely a vast improvement, but still so big. I’d much rather have a small watch and a separate GPS unit like the Timex Bodylink. But I am very small boned…

I agree, I would like it to be smaller too. . .Maybe in 2-3 years ??
Guess that explains why I was able to buy a Forerunner 305 for $165 from Amazon two weeks ago. I don’t really care about swimming with it so no biggie… This does look nice thoug.
One issue/question I have is whether that display means that it will only display 3 data fields at a time (e.g. Time, Distance, Average Pace and Heart Rate), which the 305 does. I thought the 405 was deficient on this point also because it too was limited to 3 data fields displayed at one time (and too hard to fight your way through the various screens to get to the additional field you want to view).
Huh?
The 305 can display 4 data fields.
So can this.
It’s also about .5" less in one dimension, but a little thicker.
Check out the other thread that includes a YouTube video showing it.
I’m going to have to waste some money on this.

Any word on where the speakers are? My sweat has fried two sets of speakers since they’re right on the back against my skin
If it’s waterproof your sweat/drinks/shower shouldn’t kill it.

Sorry, my post wasn’t clear. Yes, the 305 can display 4 data fields at one time (which I like). I couldn’t tell from the material I looked at whether the 310XT could show 4 data fields simultaneously (the picture at the top of the post shows only 3). The 405 cannot display 4 data fields at one time, only 3 (which I didn’t like so I went back to my 305 and sold the 405).
I wonder if the current accessories made for the 305 will work, or are they different? (HR sensor, cadence sensor)
This is from Olivia at endgaget:
The people wants a normal-sized watch with new and improved features, which are as follows:
Wireless pc-watch/ watch-watch connectivity/ANT(like garmin Forerunner 405)
Weather station(missing humidity hygrometer)
Walkie talkie(eg. WRL-00560 module or VHF module, extensible antenna/antenna around the strap)
Solar
UV sensor(measure UV index, appears in numerous watches now)
Thermometer(facing outward, does not interfere with the wearer’s body temperature)
Touch bezel(like Garmin Forerunner 405, to omit spaces for buttons/no bulkiness)
Simple LED Torch(very useful during camp)
High frequency mosquito repeller(to target tropical adventurer)
Laser ignition system(e.g.15mW laser, to start fire autonomously)
I would just add: 20. Instant STD tester.
In this youtube video he definately says and shows 4-data fields.
What I’d like to know is does that mean charging via USB is no longer possible?
I’m all set for travel charging of camera, phone and Garmin from USB, I either charge from my laptop, or take a portable USB hub with power adapter that works 110-240V, and then charge all my devices from the USB hub, cuts down chargers etc.
Garmin also just dropped the 405 to $299 from $349 retail not sure how they allow the retailer to make up the additional loss in margin since it is already at 30% or so.

I’m glad they aren’t going smaller like the 405 I was worried they’d stop makeing 305 or 301 type.
Of course I’m over 50 and I need the larger display with 4 different paramaters displayed at once.
Small is not always better(theres a joke there somewhere I believe)
And the additional battery life is nice so you can turn it on before the swim and last even through an ironman on a bad day.

Nice plug for Timex!!! I’m with you though, I have a 305 but I stopped wearing it, it’s just too big and I am not small boned it’s just huge on my wrist. I couldnt imagine swimming in it. I now use a Suunto T6c. I actually get more value out of the time and training data with the Suunto than I would out of just knowing my pace and a calorie counter that is waaaaaayyyy off. Sure exact distance would be nice and I can get a pod if I want that but I run the same places and know the distances already so I don’t need the GPS that bad. I bought the bike pod for when I ride.
