With regards to power for the Garmin 310xt, is there an option to show power based on an average interval of say 5 - 7 seconds?
I have heard, and reviewed the web, and noted some units allow you to do this (such as the Edge 500, Garmin 705, etc.)…
Without using this, it is very annoying to see the power spikes over and over and really hard to use. As well, average power doesn’t seem like the answer if it is averaging over the period of the ride, which won’t be very good if you want to do intervals, etc. That said, if doing intervals, would it average over the interval (ie if you press the lap button does the wattage average reset?).
No, currently the FR 301XT only shows real time power and lap average power. The 5 second and 30 second rolling average options are only available on the Edge series.
I’m hoping, like many others, that there will at some point be a firmware update to the 310XT to add these in.
The fact I train with power intervals a lot is why I got the Edge 500 instead of the 310. It would be hard to work in zones without a moving average of power. You can also set up the workouts to beep if you are out of power zone (not sure if 310 does that). It has some other better cycling features than the 310xt such as vertical climbing rate and barometric altitude measurement. I run with mine too and it seems fine although apparently it doesn’t have the arm swing algorithm to compensate for arm movement that the 310 has. I’m not sure if that is a problem yet, but if so I can always just put it in my fuel belt pocket
You can pick up a 305 for $125 on Amazon often if you really want a dedicated running GPS as well.
Word. I bought a 310 with hopes that it would the the “everything” GPS/SRM CPU/HR monitor. Now I own a 310xt and an Edge 500. The 310 is missing a couple things to be a good power meter display. I really like the 500. I don’t see any reason why someone would pay so much for an SRM Powercontrol with the wireless cranks.
Slight thread digression, does anyone know if the HR strap that came with your powertap is compatible with the 310XT? Or do I have to buy the Garmin HR strap? Thanks.

It does work the other way ( garmin HR strap picked up by PT headunit ). Not sure about PT strap to Garmin head unit.
