So real simple for training and racing for the buck which would you recommend.
Absolutely do not get the 405 for racing - it will not work for that unless you are a pure runner and don’t do tris. It has a touch bevel that is constantly switching modes, is extremely sensitive to moisture, and, most importantly, turns itself off after being inactive for a few minutes. With my old 305, I can lock onto satellites before the race and it will be ready to go when I hit the run.
310 … don’t waste your money on the 405.
405 = garbage.
310xt = meh…but still way better than 405.
Anyone have any thoughts on the 305?

Far less expensive and just as good. You probably have a bike computer and unless you are going to need Ant+ compatibility save the money over the 310xt and get the 305.

ANd if you don’t need the HRM on top of that…get the 205. Even cheaper.
Definitely get the 310. I upgraded the software last week for half I raced yesterday. The swim distance was accurate. I put it in multisport more and it worked well. I use a Quarq powermeter. Everything I need to race and train with is on the watch. It’s waterproof and 20 hour battery.
