Garmin 305 questions... (1)

  1. I am thinking of getting one of these for my mountain bike. What is the HR strap like - I had problems getting constanmt readings out of the old polar “hard” straps. Is the Garmin strap similar?

  2. Has anyone used one of the display GPS mapping machines. Do they provide speed data? I was thinking that if the Garmin strap didn’t work on my freakish anatomy, then I’d use a polar device in conjunction with something like the below pic.

Thanks in advance.

The heart rate strap is fine. A bit nicer than the polar hard one…not as nice as the polar soft strap one…

I have never had any problems getting reception from the garmin one…had a few issues getting reception from my polar hard one when it was cold or dry…I have never had to wet the garmin one that I can recall…

  1. I have never had any issues with it. I had a 301 and there were some issues, but the system has been improved.
  2. I also have a 60CSx, and it will provide speed, but not as clearly as the 305.

Thanks, I’ll have to find one here in Aus to look at.

Thanks Jeremy. Will do further research.

Garim HR occasionally drops out on me when on long runs but only say 20 seconds on a 2 hour run and I think that’s because I’m losing weight and aren’t tightening it up as I go that often. Never had an issue on the bike. Mine’s a Forerunner 305 but the HR strap is the same as the Edge 305 that I’m assuming you mean.

The HR strap is fine for me and at least as good as any other I’ve used but I have never tried polar.

If you search recent posts you’ll find a few smaller people have grumbled that the HR strap is too big for them. If you’re describing yourself as freakish I’m guessing that won’t be an issue (otherwise fold it and use a safety pin or sew it).

I just have weird ribs!

Do a Cher! Have some removed!

Only if it will make me faster.

Less weight! Better aerodynamics! All the pros are doing it!

Disclaimer: all of the above is blatant lies (to the best of my knowledge)
