Garm 405 heart rate off the charts

I use the 405 for running. When I am on my bike I have my Garmin Strap and Power Tap…gives me reliable HR readings. As for running, use the same strap and the 405. My heart rate goes over 200! My MHR is 188, so this is not correct…WTH? Anyone else w/this prob?

Hey…little help?

Are you running the same course? Might be some interference with it.

Different routes, so I don’t think it is interference. There is no way my HR ever gets that high…ever…188 is max in an all out 5K years ago. I have seen 182 at the track in recent years…but nover 210!

Loose, sweaty coolmax type shirt rubbing against the HR belt can cause this.

Let me guess— your HR was 231.

185 to 225…it went up as my effort went up…but if I wear my polar, it would be 150-160ish…

I was guessing 231 because that’s what mine would always read when there was radio interference… I’m still guessing that’s the problem, though.

Its pretty freaky…I am thinking of just not looking at it anymore! Doesn’t happen with my polar…

I have had some similar issues. On the bike, when I am rideing outside, I have seen up to 230 which is obviously incorrect. On the run, I have seen, what I call spikes, where the HR jumps 2,3,4 or 5 beats up per second. There is the risk that it is Afib or PVCs, etc., however, I suspect it is interference with my shirt. I am never breathing hard when it happens and when I see it jump up, I stop and count my pulse manually and it has always been lower and often much lower than what the Garmin says. It also never happens when I am inside on the bike trainer since there is no interference. I did go the Doctor to check for Afib, etc. and after some blood work and Ekgs etc, she said everything was fine. So if I were you, I would stop and manually count your pulse when you see it happening. I have read elsewhere that people have had issues with the Garmin strap and high HR readings. Some believe it is interference with powerlines, shirt materials - polyester/coolmax, not adequate conduction between the strap and chest, etc., etc. To be safe you might want to see a Doctor as well.

Mine will occasionally do this on cool days at the START of the run - not enough moisture on skin yet. It is always perfect when I am building a sweat (on the bike with jersey, indoors, hot days, most cool days.) If you are only experiencing this in the early portion of your run, this is most likely the cause.
