watched one of the DIY / makeovers last night, dude spent $38,000 redoing his garage. one thing that caught my eye was a mechanical hoist that they used to store bike (cheap bikes). anyway, wondering if anybody has a set-up better than just lining the walls with hangers like i do. i got six bikes that more or less “cover the walls”, looking for somebody that’s got a better idea. thanks.
Best thing I’ve ever done in my garage was install overhead storage. For $140 at Home Depot, I now have another HUGE amount of space. For bikes, though, I store them with a hook in the ceiling and have them vertical against the back wall. Now how I get the CAR in there is a whole 'nother story…

i’ve always been afraid to store them vertical because i was told it creates a flat spot in the rim where they hang from… don’t know if that’s an ole wives tale or truth. you obviously haven’t had any issues with that ??
How long are you planning on hanging it without moving it? 100 years? Yes, metalic “creep strain” is a very real thing, but it takes a long while.

I’ve been hanging my bikes vertically for a few years now, no issues. I think you can get over that particular fear…

You can build yourself a mechanical hoist. Setting up a 2:1 pulley isn’t that hard. You can get the parts for a few bucks per bike at home depot.
I was planning to do that around here, till I realized my ceiling isn’t all that high after all, and the wheels came down to about my chin. So I just put a 2x6 ledger on the wall and put a row of hooks across it, and alternate bikes and wheels along it.
I also hang my 3 bikes vertically, I use this hanger…

That hook looks nice enough, but you can get a simpler, cheaper hook at the local hardware store. I use something like this:

You guys keep your bikes in the GARAGE???
Bikes in the garage, car in the driveway. It’s about priorities.
I am only allowed two bikes in the bedroom, one in the living room at anytime. The rest get hidden,
BTW I hang bikes on the wall by one of those hardware store hooks. But I got a really big one and hook it on the seat,
t
only have seven, so have to make do somewhere…what they really need is their own room, but i can’t quite get approval for that…
I used to use the Delta hangers in my old garage but wanted something that I could move the hooks on to get the perfect spacing. After moving I went into Home Depot and saw a good system for the bikes made by Rubber Maid.

I now have two of the tracks and 7 mounts. I am very luck to have 12 foot high ceilings and I have the track mounted as high as possible.
This racking system is strong. I had to buy two lengths to get all my bikes hanging from the wall and they are perfectly spaced now.
As for having the bikes in the garage, my wife was fine with me hanging them downstair but since I have my garage fully armed with all the doors armed and a motion sensor I am not worried about them in the garage 10 feet off the ground.
If you do the garage right, you will have more than enough room for 7 bikes. I have 7-8 at most times and it is not an issue. I can still park two cars in the garage as well. It is just a standard size garage except for the 12 foot tall ceiling. The best part about a high ceiling is that I was able to build a 88’ X 30" workbench with the same size storage 8" off the floor. I also mounted cabinets just on the underside the top shelf (8’ off the floor) and I have a ton of storage now. My tools are mounted on a board just under the cabinet and I mounted a hallogen light under the top shelf and of course a stereo in there. I could live in the garage now if I had a mini fridge in there.
Here’s what I did.

Since then, I’ve taken the 2x4 that is attached to the ceiling down and replaced it with another 2x4, but one that is much longer with more hooks. I can now fit about 4-6 bikes in the space between the wooden door and the fan on the right. I have to alternate the bikes with handlebars up/handlebars down though. It’s in the garage but I don’t worry about it. Oh, that big ugly gray monster of a mountain bike isn’t mine. The hooks are wrapped with some sort of foamish material which is different than the red PVC posted earlier. If you go with these hooks, make sure to wrap them in duct tape. The foam material comes off easier on these than the space shuttle (too soon?). At one point, there were 5 bikes on this rack and it held fine. I have it screwed into the rafters in the ceiling using 3" wood screws or something like that.
Actually, I would like to see a few pics of your garage, please. I’m always looking at ways to adding more storage and seeing pics of yours might help me out a bit. Of course, I don’t have a garage as big as yours or a garage ceiling as high as yours, though.
nice
.
I will try to get some pictures taken hopefully this weekend if I ever get a minute to myself. Have to help a friend move and I do not think they are very well organized at this point.
I do the same thing. I have 8 rides along mine currently. However, I would be leary of just wood/deck screws. I used lag bolts and washers. Solid as a rock.
On my last set up, I was using some 3/4 inch MDF to mount the Delta hooks too then I used 2 X 3.5" #10 wood screws to bolt the MDF to the wall every 16"on center. It was super strong and with all the bikes on and me hanging from it, it did not move at all.
The new racking system that I have is screwed to the wall every 16" on center and has additional plugs that go into the wall every 4" on center so it is even more secure than the last.
