George Shehan the great running guru maintained that ones ideal weight (in pounds) should be two times ones height in inches. As I am 6’ (72") my weight s/b 144 lbs. Within 1 to 2 lbs I have maintained that weight for over 30 years of athletic endeavour (mainly running and cycling). Today I am 143.5 lbs, which means I can have an extra cookie at bed time!
I would say that is as silly as the BMI calculator. That would put me at 136 which would make me roughly the size of a small starving child in Africa.
That is silly…148? for me? lol…
you must be a stick man…
Since I’m not Kenyan and certainly no elite distance runner. At 6’, I’l happily be 20 lbs “'overweight”.
134 is not happening! I definitely have pounds to lose at 16% (or so) bf, but I weigh 178 now. totally absurd, I wouldn’t weigh much more than my girlfriend and she is fit.
for running, maybe, who knows.
But triathletes shouldn’t go by a formula for ideal running weight, should we? I want credit for swimming muscle somewhere?
FWIW, I’m 5 pounds underweight by your formula.
by your formula, i’m thirty pounds “underweight.” im fourteen, five foot nothing, and ninty pounds. according to that formula, i’m like anorexic, but my dad’s a nutritionist and he says i’m just fine.
If you’re 14 you should just eat when you’re hungry and not worry about what you weigh ![]()
