Future Smackdowns?

Anyone interested?

If so how do we pick the races without having them be biased by people not replying or picking races they know is heavily weighted?

What about the rules? Changes?

Or drop it I think it’s gay?

~Matt

How about mixing up the distances? Maybe pick a high profile 1/2 IM like Eagelman or Ralph’s?

Helloooooo…they’re called mini’s.

~Matt

I think it’s a great idea.

I’m likely not doing any hig-profile races that would be used for the contest.

I’d have the deciding factor be “average finishing time” with DNF’s receiving a finishing time of “17:30 or 18:00 or whatever”.

It needs to be quick. I’m not tired of TNO bragging about beating ST, but I am tired of them referring to themselves as “newbies”. =)

I know most athletes are self-motivated … you have to be in this sport. BUt, having the reputation/identity of others on the line as well … just sends it to a higher level. No matter who wins, everyone involved will reach a higher level … and that’s what competition is about.

Don’t tell Paul that.

I think that’s a good idea even throwing in some sprints and oly’s. Only problem there is most of the short stuff is mostly local with a few exceptions.

1/2’s are good alternatives. Mabey Chicago for an OLY?

Why average time over overall placement? Any advantage or disadvantage? I guess I’m just not seeing a difference.

~Matt

I would guess that Chicago is the Olympic most likely to be ‘traveled to’ so that’s a good choice. What about fastest relay team at a race?

I’m in for IMF if that should be the next one…

That’s an awesome Freakin’ idea…where will ST find someone that can run?

~Matt

If ST gets Bjorn in an Aquabike TNO is sunk.

Check the weekly “Who’s racin’?” thread – more sprints and Oly’s than IMs listed.

She is FOMOPOGOBGYN.

It just depends on how you are defining which board is the “fastest” … the one that has the lowest overall average finishing time or the one with the lowest placing. Many times it will be the same team, but not always.

Placings can also be affected by how many people in the different AG’s DNF. Overall finishing times are based only on what each particpant did on their own.

The one common denominator that everyone has is that they all race the same course. The time they do it in, is the only thing that matters … age and gender be damned.

don’t forget she qualified for Nationals…that means something, right?

“Placings can also be affected by how many people in the different AG’s DNF.”

Only if you use AG placement. We used overall placement which should directly correlate to time, no?

~Matt

Larry, you sure are getting your money’s worth out of that one.

I wish I had one of those to wear on Sunday, wonder if Dave Scott would autograph it for me? Maybe not…

I think he’s in Paul’s age group.

I’m in, if for no other reason than it sounds like fun.

The races should probably include all IMNA events (including Ralph’s and Florida 1/2). Also the very high profile non-drafting classics, Chicago, NY, LA, St. Anthonys (maybe Philly?). Then add the other big halves, such as Eagleman, Vineman, etc, etc.

If we are only looking at a single race, average finish time or average finish position are equivalent. But I say use position, because we might want to compare year-to-year at the same event. For example, my 11:56:19 last Sunday at IMWIS was good enough for 235th place. But in 2004, 11:56:19 only got you 457th place. That’s a huge difference. Using this method, the terrible conditions from last weekend can be compared to the race next year.

Also, good natured smack talk is good fun! My next race is IMFL in seven weeks. I’ll wave to the TNO people as they are finishing and I’m already sitting in the stands, wearing my finisher’s shirt.

-Colin

You actually wear your finisher’s shirt? Was that you at the airport Tuesday morning in your Wisc finisher’s shirt, black/red ‘livestrong-ish’ bracelet, finisher’s bag as your carry on… with the ‘S’ on your calf faintly visible??

No?
