My wife has a couple of nutty old maid aunts living in one of our rental houses at a below-market rate - don’t ask, it’s a long story…
Anyway, they’ve declared that they’re moving back to the Taylor, Michigan area. This is good news because now we’ll be able to rent the home at market rates.
They’ve asked us to lend them some money to cover full-service moving expenses (they’ll probably pack and box-up, then unpack and unbox themselves). They’re both fairly high-maintenance and have basically burned-out the whole family over the last several years. As a result nobody is “available” to move their household contents back to Michigan. They’re both fairly young (mid-50’s), but both are in poor health and unable to move themselves (plus, they’re crazy).
It’s very much worth it to us to lend them the money if it results in getting them back to Michigan. (BTW, they’ve very reliably paid-back previous loans to us).
I don’t want to send online inquiries to various moving companies because they’ll bug me with a bunch of sales phone calls, I’m just trying to get a fairly reliable idea of the moving costs associated with relocating the contents of a 2,000 sf home from Clarksville, IN (47129) to Taylor, MI (48180). It’s about 360 miles.
Any LR folks move their stuff recently? Just wondering if we’re talking about $5K or something more like $10K. I have no idea…
Just a thought, try quoting PODS (to move the contents) and then hire movers to load the unit at your place and then a separate set of movers to unload in MI.
My job paid for my move in 2004. We had a 2000 sqft house and all the normal accompanying stuff that goes with it. A group of ladies came and packed everything and then movers came and loaded it all on the truck and unloaded it at our new house. The move was from NC to TX.
I obviously didn’t pay the bill but I had to sign some docs and I recall seeing the total at $6000 or so. That was 10+ years ago.

And all of the packing etc. is on them (packing by a moving company is stupidly expensive, especially the materials, and they break stuff).
Another option is Upack and hire 2 men and a truck for loading/unloading. For that it would be probably around $2,000 for loading/unloading, truck, and transport. For an extra $1000 I am pretty sure they will pack your house up too. Also, the benefit is that it is quicker than full service. When I moved the full service company would only give me about 2 week window in which they would guarantee to deliver by while Upack or Old Dominion guaranteed in it within a day or two of pick up. Still, this is less than a third of the price than what you are budgeting.
My last move was in 2007, same idea only 200 km and it cost at least that much. One of the guys I work with was telling me his movers on his last transfer were “day labour” hired from inside a bar the night before.
i used them 10+ years ago. the closes thing i’ve ever seen to one of those spy movies; y’know, the ones where you return to the building and it looks as if no ones ever been there. amazing.
