Looking for info on full carbon clinchers that are out.Spinergy,Cormia, etc. It seems they would save a little weight, but what about when you have to change out a tube,I guess you have to be careful not to damage the rim.Any other pros or cons?
Knew someone who swore by the Reynolds Stratus DV Clincher so don’t forget that one.
blackwell 50 come in a carbon clincher.
Bontrager makes three full carbon clinchers. Quality is second to none, good weight, fast, blah blah blah… Go to bontrager.com for specs and costs.
Zipp claims they are not safe but Blackwell started to cash in with 50s. I would say go with full carbon tubulars, you’d save more and be more safe.
My Dad has campy hyperion carbon clincher. Pretty sweet and very light. I’ve ridden on them a few times, and changed 2 flats. Seemed safe and strong. Really only negative is $$$$
You can see below that I am a sales rep for Zipp, but more than that, I am an old school roadie, riding tubulars about 15 years.
My first question is…Why??!
You lose the weight advantages of tubulars, the durability of clinchers, and the braking advantages of an aluminum brake surface. I just don’t get this one. Gluing tubulars is easy, and if you are going to pay $2000 for wheels does it really matter if the tires are $50 or $80?
Also, a apare tubular is not all the much heavier to carry than a tube for a clincher, they take about the same time to change, and if you have pre-stretched and put a coat of glue on the tire, it is giong to be on the rim pretty well.
If you are worried about tubulars, buy clinchers, the new ones are great. Carbon clinchers just seem silly to me.
The new Rovals with the funky red stuff coming out of the hub are all-carbon clinchers, I think.
I would second a look at the Bontragers… they have a 5 year warranty you know?
No direct experience with it, but I would be pretty nervous putting a tire lever to it.
