Ft. Myers/Sanibel/Naples

My wife and I are planning an early spring (March) trip to Florida as a break from the Boston winter. Neither one of us have ever been to the west coast of Florida, have done the east coast from Vero Beach down to Fort Lauderdale.

It will be us and our 1.5 year old daughter. Any recommendations? Don’t want anything too fancy or pricey, something close to the beach and close to a town where we can walk around, get some food, do some window shopping, maybe a few sites to see. Long days on the beach aren’t realistic with the little one, so having other stuff to see or do would be good.

Not opposed to a chain hotel if it was in a convenient location.

Thanks.

Ft. Myers Beach would fit most of your needs, but I don’t think I would want to go there during spring break with a small child. I’m sure others will have better specific suggestions, but,I’d see what you can find in your price range on either Sanibel or Captiva.

Is Ft Myers a big spring break destination?

Sanibel and Captiva less so?

I live in Ft Myers. Yes Ft Myers beach is a spring break destination. Stay away. But after or before great place for a vacation. Walkable, shopping, great beach, affordable, good central location for day trips to Sanibel, Captiva, and Naples.

Has Sanibel/Cap kept on growing? We vacationed at South Seas from the late 70’s-early 90’s, but left when it started to feel like Miami Beach. I even lived there one summer and worked at South Seas while I trained for the '92 Great Floridian that was a great summer. Heard Charlie devastated at lot of the ‘old island’ feel with scenic businesses/homes etc.

How about Naples?

Yeah. We’ve been going to the area for family trips for about 7 years. We’ve stayed in several places in Cape Coral and the last three years have moved up to North Captiva.

We went in march a couple of times and when we visited fort Meyers beach I felt out of place without my beer bong. In Oct. and Jan. it was a very great.

I didn’t really get that spring break vibe when we were on Sanibel or Captiva. But, we generally spend travel around by boat and maybe we just missed the breakers because of that.

Boca Grande, a little north of Captiva, is a really cool place, but I’m not sure it can be done on a budget.

Naples is great. Ditto Bonita Springs. i have spent a lot of time there. pretty perfect.

Ft Myers beach is the one slice of Ft Lauderdale on the Gulf side. though still nicer. Sanibel Captiva etc … isn’t worth the drive.

I’ve been there a dozen times and it was always a nice family place in December, and once in April. Are you saying it can be wild at spring break?

Btw, to OP, East coasters usually go to Atlantic side and Midwesterners go to the Gulf side. It tends to be much more friendly.

So we’d avoid the spring break crowds in Naples? My wife’s concern is that it’s only old people. What’s the scene like in Naples/Bonita Springs?

To the other poster, we’re east coasters and have always done the Atlantic side, but we’re looking to try something new.

Wife and I went to Marco once, which is near Naples and that, at least, was geriatrically focused. Seemed like everyplace closed at 9:00 and the happy hour special was geritrol and red bull. Honestly though, just my personal perception, I dont claim to be an expert, although we still laugh about our experiences on Marco.

nah. i still wouldn’t call wild. but if you wanted the east coast, Ft Myers Beach is as close as the west side has.

to the other poster; yes, Naples is pretty quiet. its not closed-at-nine, but i don’t think you’ll happen into a rowdy bar or restaurant.
