Front Wheel Choice for Kona

Hey Slowtwitchers,

I’m starting to second-guess my choice of front wheel for Kona race day. I have a HED jet 60 front and HED-3 rear. I weigh 185, so am usually not bothered by cross winds. However, I have never experienced winds in excess of 30 MPH. What type of front wheel are most of you running? Do you bring more than one set of wheels to the race? Is this front a bad choice?

Thanks.

You’ll most likley be ok at 185. I have a set and don’t race them with the threat of strong winds as I’m 155.

If you get a bad year with 60 mph from the side you could fill your water bottles and pockets with lava rocks for stability.

I talked with Lisa Bentley who was freaked out last year with the winds and she used a Zipp 303 front and 404 rear. I’m guessing she’s about 120 lbs. soaking wet though.

I’d say your set up is good too with your weight - can’t get much more aero than that since discs are allowed. I guess you could bring a Hed Alps or 404 along in case the wind is going to be more than usual (which is a lot!)
