Front Derailleur Help

9 Speed, double, Dura Ace. I can’t fix the rattle, when I’m in the smaller cog on the front, the chain is rubbing against the front derailleur guard or guide, until I move into a middle gear in the back. Which screw is it that I turn on the front or back to move the derailluer guard outward, or should it be moved inward?

This bike has rattled for the last 2 months in the lower cog. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am guessing you are talking STI rather than bar end shifters. I am also guessing you are talking about the big chainring.

Regardless of whether it is STI or bar end shifters, hopefully the problem is just the limit screw adjustment. You probably need to loosen the outer most adjustment screw. This is your high gear adjustment. Loosening it wil allow the derailleur to move further out so as to get rid of the chain rub.

When in the small chain ring, is the chain rubbing on the inside our outside of the derailleur cage (meaning left or right respectively as you are looking down from the seat)? If it is the inside edge, you need adjust your lower limit screw (on the top of your FRONT derailleur) so that it moves closer to the bike frame. Vice versa for the other direction.

Also, is it a clamp on derailleur? Sometimes a slight rotation of the derailler (in your case clockwise) can remedy this rubbing if the lower limit adjustment doesn’e help. Last resort is cable tension, but the limit adjustment should fix the problem.
