So Big Kahuna is this weekend. I decided a nice ocean swim would be nice, but very fashionably sliced the bottom of my foot open on a clam or something. Nice big gash–3 stitches.
So greater ST cognoscenti: what’s my over under on on healing fast enough to race this weekend?
Give me your feedback on foot cuts! Let’s hear the battle stories.
uugh, sorry to hear about it. That’s not a lot of time for stitches to heal, a week is common. Maybe as the doc about dermabond - medical superglue, if you’re really serious about racing. At the same time ask how he thinks it will hold up during a run. I would think it would hold up ok, but that will depend on how deep the cut was and where it’s located on your foot. Count on some soreness/pain. Not a doc, but I’ve used dermabond on my hand/fingers.
good luck, hopefully you’re not peaking for a late season A race

The good thing this is a, “hey! I’m in good shape, let’s do this” race. So no loss there. That said, if I can race and not do myself under, I’ll find a way. Pain is okay, massively elongating healing, not so cool.
Have an checking appointment tomorrow, I’ll ask about that dermabond stuff, along with the healing.
It’s a pretty good gash: 1.5" long or so running under the 4th metatarsal, just behind the pads in your feet. So lots of flexion in that region. I’m pretty doubtful considering how much it hurts to walk today.
I’m no doctor, but sadly I have a lot of experience with stitches. With your foot being wet from the swim, it seems pretty likely that you could tear the stitches as the skin will be softened up.
a while ago I read a story about a kid who put his cut hand back into his hockey glove and now doesn’t have a hand as it was amputated due to infection
if I were you I would get a solid medical opinion before you decide to tough it out
