Freight forwarding from IM west australia

Asking this question for a friend who doesn’t post on ST. Trying to get an estimate of cost.

Has anyone used an airline’s freight forwarding service to ship their bike from IM WA to either an eastern Australian or US final destination?

Freight forwarding, in case someone isn’t aware, is having bags or other cargo go unaccompanied on a separate flight from the passenger.

My company does FF and I’ve never heard of someone doing this. If I were your friend I’d ship it by parcel (FedEx, UPS, etc). A relatively small one-off item like a bike would have a greater likelihood of getting lost in the shuffle amongst the volumes of other freight. Also, if it happens to be in a container with other goods that get delayed due to customs scrutiny your friend might not get his bike for a long while.

I looked into doing this post IMWA (back to Vancouver Canada) and the cost was very high, almost 5x what I would have paid to haul it around with me on my many flights home. I think it was like $500-$600 to ship it via slow-boat. But that was 2005.

Thanks for the feedback. Need to dig into the airlines pricing policy a bit more…their website is confusing.

There are a bunch of people doing something like this for short course worlds in australia in September.

We’re using Luggage Forward. One-way back to the states worked out to $346 for a bike box. That includes a group discount we worked out.
