Hey guys, I live in the Boston area, and I’ve been keeping my bike in the shed. What serious bike problems can I expect if it is below freezing from time to time in the shed. Am I an ass? should I have put my baby in the bedroom with me? What maintenance problems do I have to deal with? Understand that my bike sucks anyway, so I’m not that concerned, but I want to know for when I get my dream bike down the line.
Just like a human exposed to the cold, it is only a matter of time before the bike parts turn white, then black then fall off. Usually, it starts with the handle bars then the peddles. Tonight you must have the bike in bed with you under the covers. This intimate connection will definately add to your bike splts come spring.
And what about carbon fiber, like my fork. Will the epoxy suffer any ill with all of this freezing cold?
Would you leave your child in the shed? I didn’t think so! Bring that bike inside and give it a room of it’s own. My bike has taken up residence in the spare bedroom. I am even considering painting the walls to match him/her.
Let me start by saying I live in Minnesota and commute all year. Cold weather does nothing to your bike. My commuter is a carbon fiber mtn bike turned single speed with an air/oil shock. Even the fork experiences no ill effects of event the coldest day. By the way, CF is on of the most temperature tolerant materials out there (NASA relys on it for re-entry).
The cassette hub can get a bit sticky if it drops to the 20s or teens. You’ll notice this when back pedalling.
