Freehub innards technology help (1)

No direct triathlon content; bike tech.

I want to build a pedal-powered go-cart, seating two side-by-side. Each cyclist needs a freehub and derailleur, connected by a drive shaft, so that either could pedal or coast. Can I take a freehub body off a hub and use it to drive a shaft? What size shaft?

I love projects like this!

It depends on the hub…they have different axle diameters. Almost all are metric…15mm, 17mm…cheaper ones are often threaded.

Might be easier to use a standard bike width axle on each side, instead of a long axle connecting the two wheels.

Or are you wanting each rider to pedal and power both wheels? You wouldn’t be able to use the freehub bodies in this case. And turning would be odd, since outer wheel would be coasting slightly…

Yes, exactly, I want to transfer the torque to a common axle.

assuming both wheels stay in contact with the ground, one could person could drive one wheel and the other one the other, they would be able to work independent and coast independently. I general it would be no problem and you would not need to consider the issue of a differential for outer inner wheel rotation when turning. With a common axle design the problem is turning since the outside wheel inscribes a larger arc than the inner wheel which will cause one to scrub or hop. Sounds like a fun project though.
