For me, it has to be the time the first few cyclists got caught at a train crossing while the train was moving across the road at about 5 mph. 2 of the athletes got off their bikes, and threw them through to the other side between rail cars as it was moving! The same two morons then proceeded to approach the train as if they were going to try and time their jump through between cars to the other side. By this time, since it was early in the ride portion, a group of riders had gathered together and restrained the “jumpers” from attempting something that was clearly not risking their life (at least limb?) for.
I was in the water for my first tri in Town Lake. I had never swam in open water before. The guy raises the gun and then lowers it. Then I see a jet ski coming across the water. There was a woman in a wet suit on the side being held up by another life guard. She apparently had a heartattack. I never did find out what happened to her.
At the Big Blue Off road triathlon last april, there was a guy behind me who was running, and out of the corner of my eye, without any warning, a grizzly jumped out and ate him.
Back in the early 80s there was a guy in his mid 60s, really fast, who would wear old dark colored dress pants and an old light colored dress long sleeve dress shirt during the run. I asked him about this and he said he “didn’t like to sunburn”, can’t agrue with that I guess.
My first half, Caliman, there was an old guy on a road bike doing the race with training wheels on his road bike.
I can’t believe the gall of that guy! Couldn’t he spring for some Zipps?
My first half iron, Timberman 2005. I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into with the distance, so I was a little nervous. When I started the run it was about 88 degrees and humid as hell. A half mile into the run I see a man walking like Frankenstein with both legs and most of his entire body in a full-on cramp. Another half mile ahead, I see a man lying in the grass in a full-body cramp as well. It made me take it a bit easy on the run…
I am sure someone on this site saw the same thing and can confirm. At IMUSA 2004, there were 3 females on the side of the road wearing wigs and were dropping there shorts and showing us the full moon as we rode up near little cherry. I saw them later on the run without their wigs and they were not that bad. Now, I am sure this does not compare to Wildflower where I hear that sometimes the girls on the side are a little more generous in what they show.
I came up on this guy during the run when his cell phone went off. He answered it and said," Hi honey, I’m almost done. Milk and a dozen eggs? Okay, I’ll pick it up on the way home, bye."

Shit. I hate when that happens.

Hey that guy was me, I am glad someone saw that happen. That bear was a real piece of work, can you believe he had the gaul to do that during a race.

Here’s one witness to that. Those girls made my day. And I concur they “were not that bad”, better in fact.
You forgot to add that they each had a letter on each butt cheek that when they lined up spelled “R-O-C-K O-N”.
Not freaky, but definitely getting your attention. There’s a supersprint here where the bike course runs adjacent and very close to the Air Force Base runways. It is a wee bit startling the first time you get a plane coming in and darn near landing on top of you.
I did an olympic distance race in Germany when I was stationed there. After the swim the guy next to me in transition stripped out of his one piece tri-suit (right down to his birthday suit) and then put an almost identical tri-suit on for the bike.
I came to the race with my college roommate. Later on I saw her bike on the side of the road with the wheel bent to one side. Here’s how screwed up our priorities are: I took her bike back to the car before checking the med tent for her. Apparently she had a little crash with some road rash. When I got to the tent she was huddled naked under a sheet. For some reason the medical personnel took all of her clothes off. She didn’t speak much German so she just waited for me. Last time I ever raced in Germany.
Did anyone else see the young guy doing the run at Timberman this year in a suit?
I saw it and was going to post it… I didn’t see a bib # on him though. I did see him on both loops.
I saw that too (on my 2nd loop, coming back, he was headed out).
I yelled out that I thought it was only business casual. I guess he didn’t get the memo.
A girl crouched in between 2 of the boxes that hold the special needs bike bags at IMAZ, at special needs bike stop. She was in between the boxes, not behind them, taking a piss through her bike shorts, while screaming her head off cheering for the riders passing her. The single loudest cheering I heard all day.
Or maybe the guy at IMFL 05 (I think) who passed me around mile 20 on the run, mumbled something, and then staggered up into someones pitch black front yard and climbed under a shrub. He put his hands together and used them like a pillow and looked like he was going to sleep.
