How do I choose between the Kaiser disc and the Madeira ? I’m possibly looking at replacing my Corima disc later in the year with a clincher (more piece of mind when I move upto long course). Fellow slowtwitcher JKAllen13 has had great experience with your 575 and I was pleased with the quality of his disc but how do I choose between the models though ? I’m lean but also 87kg and a insatiable biking machine !
No. My provision to go long was always going to be after the age group worlds in Lausanne next year. I may double this up (hey it worked for Karen Smyers !) with purely a finish aimed at IMUK at the end of the year.
I may go for the 575 but the silver…well, who else would have one when I race ?
Oh, my understanding was that Long course was discounted after being helped off the bike after the 50 mile TT. I didn’t realise that the 575 was available in Silver, it would match your wetsuit, so you could ride in it if you were cold, and still look co-ordinated!!!
I stand by the fact that yes long course isn’t comfortable and between that damn TT and the long ballbuster duathlon last year I’ll stay short on the whole (I certainly won’t be a serial IM’er) but I need one IM finish to my credit ! Besides (and this is probably worth another thread in itself) I wouldn’t consider my tri racing complete without a Worlds GB vest and an IM finish !
Definetly feasible since thats early season and I could recover to do the Worlds. My only thing would be I intend to get a lot of friends down to see me suffer - that might be too far…
buy the 5-7-5 to improve your time. buy the kaiser to improve your time and look cool. buy the madeira to improve your time, look cool and your a weight weenie…=) they all have the same aero profile. 5-7-5 are running 2 weeks to ship, madeira are 6 weeks and kaisers will be the first of may until we start to ship.

Bingo… couldn’t have said it better myself, whoever this guy Frank is he’s right on. Good thing you posted here instead of the manufacturer’s website, after all I’m sure you would have gotten some bs reply from a marketing guy.
So this deserves an extra question…what’s the weight difference between the 5-7-5 and the Kaiser…for the Kaiser/Madeira, 140grams and 150 bucks…what about 5-7-5 to Kaiser - $100 and x grams?
Am also planning to buy a disk as soon as I receive my new P3, but not sure which one to choose from Renn…
Frank if I was looking at getting a 575 clincher in Campag (for 10sp record) how long and how much would it take to get one over here based on current stock ? Ideally I’d look to be ordering one late April. The location would be Bournemouth England near to where you sent Julians one over last year. If you want to reply off forum use brdyer@bournemouth.ac.uk
Frank cannot ship to the UK because he now has an import agreement with Ciclisimo (who also import Hed and Zipp). Even though Ciclisimo sell direct to the customer they charge £399 for the Renn 575, when at current exchange rates it costs about £210 in the States. Value!!!
we had to start using someone in the uk. we did ship usps to the uk for $40. the max size they would take is 79 inches (lenght plus girth). the smallest box we use is 81 inches. with this box we get 2 of 10 damaged in transit to europe. the better box is 26x6x25. because i am nice to the people at my post office they have been letting them through but for not very much longer. we were going to have to ship ups or fedex. shipping would rocket to about $200 (no joke, look it up for a 26x6x25 box). then add the vat tax and bonding from the shipper. it’s the best we could do. now, “mainland” europe still allows a 108 inch box for most countries and we can still use usps. chunnal anyone? ciclismo is also paying a premium to get them over there in one piece and they pay the vat and bonding. then they have to price it so they can sell to the retailers and make money.
Import duty and VAT run to about 23% on bike components, so in my opinion Ciclisimo are still charging some premium. Considering they import three brands of discs you have to wonder if they would have any interest in pricing your discs as competitively as you do. Perhaps not quite so bad as a few years ago when a Corima disc was £350 direct from the factory in France and £650 from Yellow here. Whatever the case, £399 is more than I can afford.
I tend to agree with Duncan, it is a little off that Frank’s reputation is built on service and value and then you end up with an organisation that is marking the prices up by more than 100% and putting it down to “expenses”. Whilst I understand Franks need to have someone distribute his product, I wonder whether the selling price was any part of that consideration when choosing a distributor or whether the agent was simply given the discs at a cost and there was no MSRP that they had to adhere to?
Either way, I’d simply wait until I was in the states and arrange to buy one before I go so I can live without ciclismo…
i just looked up the shipping with ups. ups worldwide expedited (the lowest option) memphis tn 38104 to the uk for a 26x6x25 box 5lbs. is $199.25. this is what we would have had to start to use. now. 400 plus vat would bring it to $492 plus $200 shipping. (and i think there is a bonding fee on your end) $692. ciclismo is selling them for $718. have i missed anything? i have to follow the rules. i can’t send this stuff marked gift or value at $50…and spending an hour in a usps line only to beg the new guy at the counter to let the over the limit box through because “i have been doing it for two years” isn’t going to cut it anymore.
