Francois, do you read fiction?

If so, the book for you is The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time", by Mark Haddon.

Mystery and maths. Fantastic.

T

looks fun…will check it out. thanks.

“looks fun” ? Dude, Tim said it involves math… how fun can that be?!

It’s vacations time, you should be reading something that didn’t require you to THINK at all!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Vacation?? for students maybe…july is THE month for NSF proposals…not exactly vacations…

and math ARE fun!

Check.

This is a pretty good book. I thought that the look inside the mind of an autistic person was more notable than either the math or the mystery.

It’s an easy read.

Agreed, but I thought making the child have math skill was a brilliant choice. It allowed him to use math and logic to explain how the child thought in a really simple and insightful way.

The author could have chosen a variety of autistic characteristics, and I think Francois’ math background will make this book even more enjoyable to him.

Nice that I can, just from an internet forum, from Georgia, suggest fiction to an ex-pat, globe-trotting frenchman in New Mexico who could kick my ass in any endurance event, but not hoops. I think.

Long live Slowtwitch!

if you like ‘inside someone’s mind’ books, I can only recommend:

  1. The chess player (Stefan Zweig)
  2. The Master of Go (Yasunari Kawabata)

Hey I just picked up a few slide rules on ebay, Just for Fun. Math is Fun, and Logical. Logs are Great.

Ok but your brain should also take some days off…

Life’s too short… GO CALVIN&HOBBES! ;))

I will have all the time to have days off when I’m dead
.

Stop by Kona to visit us in October. You’ll also have pleanty of time there to learn how to SURF!

That would be great! Come on just take Klep advise and drop by…it will be triathlon, surf and “chicks”…

Opss…sorry no “chiks” for you!

I’m on it. Thanks…T

Funny how things go from “fiction involving mystery and math” to “surf, triathlon and chicks”!

Talking about Maths & books, have you read Fermat’s enigma by Simon Singh. I thought it was well done.

Another one I really enjoyed, even though not about Maths but the sory of the universe and life, was A short story of nearly everything by Bill Bryson

I read “The Curious Incident…” a little while ago and was very impressed. It really is an insight into the mind of an autistic child that few writers would be able to capture.

I also recently picked up “The Race” by Dave Shields on the way through an airport. It is a short fiction book all about the Tour and a rider in it. I was wondering if anyone had read it and what they thought of it?

I have read Fermat’s enigma and the actual proof of Andrew Wiles…which being not in my area was very difficult to follow
.

Do you think that Fermat did have a proof? or that he thought he had one and that he made a mistake?

i don’t think he did…educated guess.

Yes, it seems that if there were a simple proof, it would have been found by one the Mathematicians that looked for it over the last 300 years.
