Frame integrity compromised?

I live in a relatively small condo and so have to store my two bikes one on top of the other on a tall bike rack. It is essentially a pressure fitted pole with hooks to hang the bike.

The rack was not installed properly and came crashing down, sending my P2 across the room and into a coffee table. I looked the bike over and for the most part it has only suffered some minor scratches. However, the crossbar has a dent in it. The frame is aluminum, not carbon. From what I can see the frame is still straight and feels strong when I apply pressure.

Have I compromised the integrity of my frame? I think it’s fine and am not looking for an excuse to buy a new bike, but I also don’t want to have my bike fold underneath me when I’m screaming down a hill someday.

Thoughts?

What is a “crossbar”?

Dude knows what a crossbar is, he’s just pointing out that you didn’t use proper terminology.

Your frame: It’s a judgment call. I’d get a new one. Metal alloys can maintain their integrity while carbon cannot.

Safety is a calculated risk. Why not keep the odds in your favor?

If the tube is kinked to the point of tearing or breaking through you need a new frame. If the dent is not severe or near the ends of the top tube, you are fine. If it is closer than two inches from the ends, then you need to have it checked by a good mechanic.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

The dent seems fairly deep to me, but the aluminum hasn’t torn/broken through. It is about three inches from the stem.

I’ll take your advice and have my mechanic take a look at it when I have it in for my next tune up. In the meantime I’ll take the chance of possibly taking a bad spill off of my trainer.

Thanks again.

Its hard to say, do you have a photo you can post of the dent. I assume it on the frames main tubes? ( Top Tube/ down tube or seat tube) Most likly if it just a dent it will be no problem but to be safe show it to a professional. If its ok put a decal on it so you do not have to look at it every time you ride.

I my experience bike mechanics know less then people on this forum. It will just give them a reason to sell you a new frame. I haven’t seen the dent, so i can’t tell you whats up, but likely if the geometry is still intact you are ok. My cross bike got dents all over it and a friend of mine is still riding hiss CAAD5 frame with a giant dent in the top tube, right down the middle of it. As far as i am concerned… its strain hardening, the frame is stronger in the area of the dent.

This probably isn’t helpful, but I’ve had a dent on the middle of the underside of the top tube on my mountain bike (Trek Fuel aluminum) & it hasn’t failed me yet (several years). I think I read somewhere that that part of the frame actually gets stronger. But I wouldn’t bank on that one.

That only means you have never met a good mechanic.

You’re probably OK, but if in doubt there are aluminium P2/K/SL frames on ebay all the time.
