Probably a dumb question, but I’ll go for it anyway. My posted workout for today includes a fractional lap. What does something like this mean in a swim workout? **16 x 37.5 @:15r **
How do you do 37.5? Am I supposed to stop and float for 15s at the 37.5 marker? Hell… I don’t know.

You’re supposed to have enough residual speed to be able to coast into the wall for your :15r interval.
Hell, beats me what that means. Misplaced decimal/typo? Where did you get the workout?
It’s posted our our club training page. It’s not the first time this has confused me though. The masters program was doing 12.5’s the other day. I showed up after they were done, and was working through the swim workout, until I hit the 12.5 line. Had no idea what that means.
in my experience - it means you stop in the middle of the pool… and start the next interval from the middle of the pool - but the next interval will start on the wall
I frequently have 25s in my swim workouts and I swim in a 50M pool. So yes, stop 1/2 way or go from sprint to easy 1/2 way.
so if you’re swimming in a 25yd (or m) pool, then yes, you’d stop 1/2 way. If you’re swimming in a 50 M (or yd) pool then stop 1/4 way… so for 37.5 that’s 25+12.5 swim 1.5 lengths.
I swim in a 50M pool that has a marking at 15M, 25M, 35M. We frequently do drills or something (single breath, kick) to the 15M line and then freestyle for the rest of the length.
Another would have us start intervals from middle of pool to work on flip turns
That’s what I was thinking: Our coaches called them 2-Turn 50s or 1-Turn 25s.
We’d start and finish each set near the dip of the deep end. We’d accelerate into and out of the wall focusing our form on high turnover, speed, and quality flips. When you add up the distance, it was clearly longer than a 25/ 50.
I guess starting from treading water could be useful if you’re a water polo player… or marginally applicable to a treading-water start in a tri. That said, you’d probably be better off swimming the whole 50.
It’s probably just someone’s attempt to be “creative” and “spice things up”
My kids sometimes do sets like that that start and end in the middle of the pool. Its a bit of a mystery to me but I always figured it was to get more strength work since its alot harder to get up to speed from a dead stop with no push off.
Of course, it could also just be because the coach is sadistic and likes to see tired kids struggle to tread water.
My old masters squad coach used to occasionally have us include 25s (in a 50m pool). I’m going to second the idea that it’s more about restarting away from walks than anything else.
My guess is that 37.5 is for that reason, but also because doing 12.5 is just silly…

That skill can actually translate a fair amount in terms of turning around a buoy in open water- you’re getting used to moving in different ways in the water without having anything to push off on.
