Foxcatcher movie: Brooks, Steve, Jeff, Joy, you in there?

any of you tri guys make it into the movie? and the lady foxcatchers? not you guys and gals, but, you know, actors that play you all. it starts tomorrow i think, so, probably nobody’s seen it yet. but i’m sure you guys have been interested in finding out.

I must me unaware of something. Why would triathletes be in the movie?

let google be your friend. there were 2, that i know of, big athletic interests of john du pont: wrestling and triathlon. in the late 80s and early 90s there was an east coast contingent of triathletes who formed team foxcatcher, some of whom lived on the compound. always one of the very top teams around. very potent.

this was while john was weirdly eccentric, probably before he went bat shit crazy.

Ann, I know the wrestling but had no idea about the triathlons. That was before my time in the sport.

i am like an old, cranky google. keep my zirc fittings greased and it’s remarkable what forgotten stuff i can drudge up from the past. same with monty. he’s better than i am.

Saw the trailer two weeks ago. Team Foxcatcher was my first thought. I grew up in New Jersey, started racing in the 80s and remember seeing the Foxcatcher crew at a lot of races.

Dan - The March 1986 issue of Tri-Athlete Magazine had John du Pont on the cover and proclaimed him to be the “father of triathlon”. I’ll have to pull it out and scan the article to see who wrote it and why he was proclaimed the “father of triathlon”. " Tri-Athlete Magazine" and “Triathlon Magazine” merged in the fall of 1986 to become "Triathlete Magazine. I’m at IMAZ this week, but will be back in Florida next week and will look for this article. Z

Laurie Hug swam with Team Foxcatcher for a bit. Doubtful she appears in the movie.

(I don’t know why I guessed that she might have)

(oh, and it is “dredge,” not “drudge”)

This is actually where I got my start in the triathlon world when I was wrenching in West Chester for a lot of the athletes. It all ended when John pulled a gun on me when I went to pick up Joy Hansen’s car.

John was very ill and unfortunately mental illness gets ignored in this country. Sad ending to a man who did a lot of good for both triathlon and wrestling.

Interestingly, Wikipedia talks more about his love of modern pentathlon, although it does mention Joy as being a triathlete living at the compound.

I’m not much of a movie buff, but this seems intriguing. I’ve never seen Steve Carrell in a non-comedy role.

There was also swimming and he was crazy then. The program was run by Dick Schulberg. It was pretty amazing swimming there looking back on it.

Hadn’t heard of the movie or story before, but after also having scanned Wikipedia it certainly seems intriguing.

I was thinking the same exact thing, triathlon was a big part of this guys life and a whole bunch of our friends back in the day. Wasn’t Kenny Glah also on the team? So it was Brooks Clark, Steve Fitch, Jeff Devlin, Joy Hansen, who else? I seem to recall the team was a lot bigger, loaded with east coast and mid of the country folks. J David and a pile of smaller teams had the lock on CA athletes, this was the first truly sponsored east coast team…

I won’t give anything away, but it was weird how it all went down in the end. I too wonder from some of our friends if they could see this coming, not the exact thing, just something weird that was definitely coming eventually with this guy…

glah was on the team. I believe his wife was as well

Ken Glah had an awesome flaming red mullet. I hope they don’t leave the mullet on the editing room floor, that would
be a shame.

Don’t forget the stamp…

on them.

Pretty good short article here from wrestler Mark Schultz (and movie trailer), really looking forward to the movie. So bizarre and tragic, unfortunate that du Ponte apparently didn’t get the help he needed before it was too late.

SPOILER ALERT though from the article for those of you who don’t already know the story…

I saw an advance: it is purely focused on Wrestling. Very good film however quite depressing even by the standards of sad films.

I was friends with some of the swimmers there. We were freaked out when that hit the news. Did not realize there was a tri component to the nutter. Always knew about the pentathlon thing tho.
