What a fucking joke. For Fox News to echo Repub talking points like its news is such an abnegation of basic journalistic responsibility, it’s difficult to being commenting. Unfortunately, their captions are typically that slanted and screwy. And it’s not as if CNN has the same interview with a quote saying, “Why are the Repubs trying to push through a judge with rather limited qualifications while covering their ass with the race/gender card?”
So much for Fair and Balanced. I met a woman who is a news producer there, and the whole slogan thing and the notion of balance is a big joke there. Nobody there believes it. Only the yokels in the audience who want to deny the truth have enough nerve to say something that asinine.
Ok, how long will it be before the same right-wingers who spent the past week bashing Newsweek will show up on this thread and argue that Fox is the paradigm of objective investigative journalism? 3-2-1…
DAMN! I had a reply but I submitted it right when the site went down for a few minutes and it didn’t post. It made a lot of sense though…
I doubt it. I think there are limits even to stupidity, and the whole notion of Fox News being remotely balanced relies primarily on a wink and a nod. I think the moment you try to mount a defense you open yourself to all sorts of fact-based attacks for which there is little rebuttal. I hardly think that Alan Colmes is representative of thoughtful men, much less the state of progressivism today.
What I haven’t figured out yet is whether Fox is actually influencing people or just tapping into a retrograde impulse in American life. Given that they don’t actually produce much in terms of news, and spend most of their resources on developing pundit personalities with more bluster than substance, it’s not clear whether they are just preaching to the converted or not.
What’s funny is that Fox News is not terribly strong at fact-checking, much less journalistic integrity and have been busted numerous times in the past, but have never fired anybody or disciplined or even retracted anything. I guess being conservative and having the White House behind means never having to say you’re sorry. Or is that just Bill O’Reilly?
I think you are underestimating the degree to which conservatives think this is real news. I’ve met people who have said to me verbatim, I like Fox because it is more “fair and balanced.” And I suspect that this thread won’t fade into the background without a couple comments along those lines. Of course, I otherwise personally agree with your view of news operation.

These are the same people who think that Fox News balances out the liberal “The Daily Show” news show with that noted news anchor Jon Stewart…
The main conservative defense of Fox News is that their news anchors aren’t biased. Of course not: of the hundred or so people who appear on Fox News, about three apparently claim to be news anchors. The rest are “commentators”, and therefore are free to opine away.
Fox News Rocks! Here is a listing of recent cable news ratings: FOXNEWS HANNITY/COLMES 1.6 FOXNEWS O’REILLY 1.6 FOXNEWS SHEP SMITH 1.3 FOXNEWS GRETA 1.2 FOXNEWS BRIT HUME 1.2 CNN LARRY KING 0.9 MSNBC HARDBALL 0.8 CNN PAULA ZAHN 0.6 CNN AARON BROWN 0.5 MSNBC OLBERMANN 0.5 MSNBC NORVILLE 0.4 MSNBC SCARBOROUGH 0.4 CNBC DENNIS MILLER 0.1
Monday’s numbers:Total viewers: FNC: 825,000 / CNN: 344,000 / MSNBC: 175,000 / HLN: 173,000 / CNBC: 158,000
Got to love Alan Colmes and Juan Williams too.
Perhaps it was wishful thinking on my part. I have met a couple of people like that, but I think even they know deep down that there is some subterfuge here.
I mean, when people who work there don’t even think it is “fair and balanced”, how can an outsider expect to believe it in spite of all evidence to the contrary?
I guess my problem is that it so clearly fits into an agenda that I have difficulty understanding how that isn’t obvious to people. People can attack the “liberal media” but very few can articulate a coherent basis for why they are allegedly so liberal. Perhaps it’s because their basic instinct is to investigate, especially those in power, which I believe tends to threaten conservative interests, and those interests who would rather pursue their agendas unimpeded. But I can’t think of a reason that has to do with prurient self-interest. But with Fox it’s obvious - its protection of the status quo, and the furtherance of wealth accumulation by the relatively few. The mercenary motive is a simple one to understand, and holds up a lot better than anything the left can be accused of. It’s not as if you can accuse enviro-nuts of being selfish people.
Ratings don’t matter to liberals. They simply dismiss them as ignorant rednecks who can’t think for themselves. Gotta wonder why FOX numbers are up and conservative talk radio is so successful? I was gonna actually start a thread about this because I really am curious, why if liberal ideas were so in line with the mainstream American public wouldn’t they have their own talk radio shows?
What conclusion am I supposed to draw from ratings?
What do ratings have to do with anything?
American’s eat up all kind of shite products… look at Ashlee Simpson ![]()
Ah, the liberal contingent cheerfully constructs a strawman and happily goes about knocking it senseless.
I don’t think any conservatives will really claim that Fox News doesn’t have a conservative bent. They’ll claim that it’s the only network news that doesn’t have a liberal bias, and they’ll be right.
Now, how long before all the liberals start hollering about how objective the big three really are?
So I have a question for anyone…
I pretty much get my news online, and dont watch commentators. I read CNN and MSNBC all the time, and don’t really see a “liberal bias”. Once in a blue moon I’ll look at the FoxNews site and it’s doesnt seem that far out on the right wing either.
Is it just the TV personalities that give the networks their bias (either real or perceived)?
Another reason I am a proud American music afficianado; DMB at the top, and Weezer, and Jack Johnson, and Green Day. Wow! No sign of Ms. Simpson. And another example of liberals making shit up as they go along. Yep, Fox News is conservative too and I love it!

I think you hit the nail on the head, if you look at most of these shows FOXNEWS HANNITY/COLMES 1.6 (Not News but talking heads yelling) FOXNEWS O’REILLY 1.6 (A guys personal views and some what goofy at that) FOXNEWS SHEP SMITH 1.3 (OK so this has some news, what quality it is, is your opinion) FOXNEWS GRETA 1.2 (Not News, Opinions) FOXNEWS BRIT HUME 1.2 (Some news Mostly talking heads like fox news sunday only smaller) CNN LARRY KING 0.9 (Not news, strictly entertainment) MSNBC HARDBALL 0.8 (Never watched it don’t know but would guess its the same as H&C show) CNN PAULA ZAHN 0.6 (Never watched it don’t know but would guess its just opinions not news) CNN AARON BROWN 0.5 (Who??) MSNBC OLBERMANN 0.5 (He should have stayed at ESPN, Opinion not news) MSNBC NORVILLE 0.4 (Never watched…) MSNBC SCARBOROUGH 0.4 (Never watched…) CNBC DENNIS MILLER 0. (Opinion, and one that no one like so it has been canceled)
So when did a bunch of talking heads become news? 90% of it is opinion of current events and everyone of them has a slant one way or the other. The sad part is people think that Hannity, Limbaugh, Franken or Soros are people who report news.
I’m conservative and watch fox news because I enjoy the debate between people like Juan Williams and Bill Kristal but I’m pretty aware that it’s the opinions of personality not NEWS.
If you know so much about music you’d know he was referencing WHEN Ms. Simpson was popular. I would have given my left arm to have her wretched music stop haunting me on the radio, it was everywhere.
I heard the Weezer is so-so, lots of filler but the good stuff is great.
Can’t stand that “Ain’t no holla back girl” song by Gwen, I wish she’d go back to being the super hot unknown lead singer of a sweet ska band.
Cuz liberals work during the day at jobs where they don’t listen to the afternoon radio shows
Seriously, listen to the commercials on a.m. radio and it tells us exactly who is listening: Gullible people who buy crap like “Height Max” and “Memory Max” and Garlique … Fox news is another story, yes its super popular, but they do do way more stories on missing kids and Michael jackson than on politics.
Here’s another take on this channel:

I think its cool to see the likes of Hannity flabbergasted when Tom Clancy says Iraq 2 was a bad idea. That’s what makes it sometimes fun to watch. Lots of crap though, too. O’reilly can give some terrible ‘interviews’ but sometimes he lets people talk. Depends on his mood I think.

Thanks for making my point. It’s like when CNN was at the top of rankings. And I know a shitload about music and Weezer rocks; have you heard HashPipe? Beverly Hills? But I agree with Stefani was better when she was just a young girl from OC.
