I don’t understand why people are hell bent on pissing on a charity thread so I’ll repost it so people interested in the cause can do so without having to read “Bush Sucks” or “7-Eleven is making money”

So here we go again(fourth time).

Here’s an excellent opportunity during this holiday season to support our troops who are away from friends and family.

7-Eleven and the USO are coming together and selling wristbands. Many on this site sported the Livestrong bands…why not support another worthy cause and sport the USO band.

Go to any 7-Eleven and get yours now or give directly to the USO (my preferred method.)

WASHINGTON – 7-Eleven® customers can support American troops and the United Service Organizations (USO) ® by purchasing a “Support Our Troops” wristband. For each wristband sold, $1 will be donated to the USO to fund programs and services for military service members and their families worldwide.

Suitably camouflage-green in color, the wristband is embossed with “Support Our Troops” on one side and “USO” on the other. They are currently rolling out to participating 7-Eleven stores nationwide and will be available exclusively at those 7-Eleven stores while supplies last.

“Americans want visible ways to show their support for the individuals serving our country,” said Jim Keyes, president and CEO of 7-Eleven, Inc. “They have flags at their homes, bumper stickers on their cars … now they can wear their support on their arm. Besides providing a visible way to say thank-you to our troops, the wristbands help raise much-needed funds for the USO, which has uplifted those serving in immeasurable ways both in times of war and peace.”

“Purchasing a wristband not only supports the USO’s efforts on behalf of service members around the world, it also is a visible sign of support for those men and women who are sacrificing so much for their country. The USO greatly appreciates the support of 7-Eleven,” said Edward A. Powell, USO president and CEO.

7-Eleven is the first national retailer to offer a wristband as a way to raise money to support our troops through USO programs.

Actually, no where in the third thread did it say Bush sucks. It did speak of 7/11 making money though. I am sincerely interested in why you keep reposting this.

It is a forum. A entity started to provide discourse. You posted something you wanted to get out to the masses, some people civilly posted a alternative view.

Somehow you feel this is wrong, why?

To define 7Eleven or any of its thousands of local franchisees as “charities” is absurd, as is the 33% net to the USO, a organization to which it is easy to give directly…should you think a photo with Lars Ulrich is what our troops are lacking in “support.”

Brian286’s parents should also be notified, and he should be grounded from DSL for a week.

He probably feels it’s wrong because it’s not exactly what he thinks.

I’ll say it, again. These bands are really stupid, as 7-Eleven makes more than USO does, so they should be called ‘Support 7-Eleven, we aren’t doing as well as we used to so we’ll appear all patriotic’ bands.

If you really want to support the troops, join. I hear they are hiring.

I cant necessarily disagree with number 1. I can wholeheartedly disagree with number 3.

I feel sorry for the poor souls (US and Iraqi) stuck over there against their will, killing and being killed or maimed in the desert, all for the crazy desires of some very inept politicians and rich boys.

If you guys want to support the troops, I can give the mail addresses of some soldiers over there (including my BIL). If you want to send them a Christmas card or Holiday Greeting, I am sure they will appreciate it.

I mailed them a poster composed of a picture of my 3yo son on his bike giving the “thumbs up”, with the heading “Thanks for defending my freedom and ensuring my safety”. They took a group photo, signed it and mailed it to my son. Awesome.

These guys just want to know that what they are sacrificing is appreciated by those who benefit (us).

I think they’d rather have a card/gift than people wearing wrist bands … especially when 7-11 is taking 66%

I saw somewhere that the troops are requesting “comic books” and other stuff to read.

Best response so far. This is what should be done. Not some stupid wrist band.

I think it would be awesome if people sent soldiers (even ones they do not know) a “family picture”. Enclose a note saying “The Johnson’s want to thank you for defending their freedom”. I’d be willing to bet those pictures never leave the soldier.

Imagine being a soldier over there and getting a “thank you card” and picture from someone you’ve never even met. Heck, I bet when they get back, they’d look you up to thank you.

I’d imagine that the local recruiting office could put you in touch with service men and women from your area … and I know churches have a list of in-action soldiers.

These guys DO the job we all SAY we’d do. It’d be nice to thank them, even in the smallest way.

Brian286, I am not saying that support your troops wristband is a bad idea. I’m thinking of my BIL and his group … they love to get mail.

Maybe it is not that it is a charity thread. Maybe it is that I miss Tom D’s posts, and that I just ain’t that interested in what someone has to say that seems to have participated in discouraging Tom from posting.

BTW–is this thread triathlon related? Are you selling something? Shouldn’t this be in the Lavender Room, etc.?
