Forum Spam Proposal

I cooked up an idea to reduce the “is this too sexy…” type of spam we’ve been getting recently.

How about adding a random tri-related question to the “create account” function and run the account requests through a moderator before allowing access? If you wanted to get fancy, you could even profile new account requests and run those from suspicious IP’s through a more stringent filter.

Some typical questions might be:

Where is the Ironman World Championship held?

What are the distances in an Olympic Triathlon?

What is it called when an athlete follows another swimmer or cyclist closely behind?

Where do triathletes get food and water during a race?

Questions like these would require potential members to have a basic knowledge of English and triathlon to join the site.

Ok, let me have the snarky comments…

Just don’t ask:-
Tubs or Clinchers?
Trispoke or deep rim?
1 piece or 2 piece?
What should the cut off be?
Should there be a BMI requirement before the purhase of a bike over $1000?

pretty good idea. of course, that’s easy to google. maybe it would deter a few.

it’s not a big problem. i average about one a day. the main problem are legitimate readers who are banned because they’re using ISPs that don’t seem to do very well at keeping spammers off their networks. there are a few u.s.-based ISPs whose IP ranges i’ve banned, and i wish i didn’t have to do that.

Yah, the first two questions could be googled pretty easily. The last two look to be more google-resistant.
