Forgot Bike was on Car

Does anyone know if your homeowners policy will cover your bike if your forgot it was on top of your car and you pull into your garage and ----- ooops!
The carbon frame is totally destroyed…what should I tell the insurance company to get this bike covered?

Any advice?

I think you’re covered. It was an honest accident. I think if you just tell them what happened you might be OK.

That is a shame. Good luck with your insurance claim. I hope it works out.

Just the thought gave me actual goosebumps. If stephen King every wanted to scare a group of triathletes that would be the way.

Been there, done that! I ran under the parking garage at our local Starbucks with my beloved road bike on top about 2 years ago.

Homeowner’s deductible of $500 applied, and they cut me a check for the other $900 in repair costs (it was a steel frame, so I had it fixed). Needed top tube, bars, stem, fork and one wheel.

“Household goods damaged in transport” was the claim rationale.

Geez, I’ve forgot cups of coffee on the roof of my car, and a pair of gloves once… but a BIKE!? Well, I guess it can happen to anyone!

Depends on your carrier’s policy contract, but seems like something that ought to be covered under the contents section of your HO policy. For instance if your house burned down and your bike was in the garage and was destroyed, it should be covered in that situation. Not sure, though, if it would make a difference that you were not on your own property (don’t know if that would necesarily make a difference). If you got hit by a car out on the road, and the collision destroyed your bike, and let’s say the driver drove away or just had no liability insurance (thus, no way to hold him responsible), I am not sure that your HO would cover it.

Call your agent before you contact the carrier to file the claim. He/she should be able to help you sort through the policy. Good luck.

I’m so afraid that I would do that, that I put a hitch on my car and have a hitch-bike-rack.

You have my sympathies. I recently changed insurance companies and was shocked to find out they only covered bikes up to $100! They didn’t even have an option for additional coverage. I hope your situation turns out better. I’m so parinoid about doing that. When I leave the house with the bike on the rack I put something in the middle of the garage floor so I can’t drive in when I return.

What better excuse than to get that new Guru Aero-Ti. Sorry for your loss.

Trek 5200…what do you think i should get to replace?

A Trek 5200. I love mine. Rode it for first time on Sunday. Smooth!

Something similar just happened to me on Sunday…

I was coming back from a weekend group ride with friends with my Roo, my mtn bike, and my buddies BRAND new Trek mtn bike on my trunk bike rack. After about 1 1/2 hours into the drive back, we happen to look back and his bike is GONE! We didn’t make any stops, so it obviously broke loose of rubber stretch straps and took flight down the PA turnpike behind us! Lord I feel awful for my buddy and we we’re freaking that it cause a major accident. Luckily, after calling the state police, no pile-ups or fenderbenders along our route occurred.

I don’t have homeowners, would my car insurance cover anything?

Keep us posted on this Greyhound. Good luck!

It’s a situation I’ve had friends do before and potential laughter aside, at least you can enjoy the excellent sensation of a new bike purchase…

Hmmmmm, bike purchase…

Trek 5900. Take the opportunity to upgrade

Same thing happened to QuintanaRooster’s friend. Maybe he has some information to help you out.

Good luck on getting your bike replaced.

Now you have to worry about getting rear-ended. I always wonder what the reaction of someone who rear-ends me is going to be when I tell them the replacement cost of my bike!

I did it last summer on the day before my A race. fortunaetly, the bike survived, the Thule rack gave way. I have a friend who has done it twice. His name will be withheld for legal reasons.

I just replaced my 5200 with the new Specialized Roubaix Pro. Compare the 5900 to the Roubaix pro & you’ll be surprised.

I was really concerned about my 5200 being stolen. So I called the insurance agent and he said it would be covered under my home owner’s policy. His question to me was, “How much could it be worth?” I told him what the price was and he said that it would definitely be covered. Hope your situation works out for the best.

I would take a look at a 5900. The Trek TT I have is stiffer than a 5200 in the bottom bracket area. I am not sure if that is because of the design or the 110 versus 120 gram carbon difference. The TT is definitely a better ride than the 5200.

Ouch. I guess that’s one way to achieve a steeper geometry.

All kidding aside, every homeowner insurance policy is different. For instance, I just discoverd that I have to got and get my bike professionally “appraised”, as my homeowners only covers up to $500 for a bike.
