Has anyone used their Garmin Forerunner for checking distances when open water swimming?
It is supposed to be waterproof, or water-resistant, but what are your thoughts?
Thanks,

Waterproof for 30 min at like 10ft underwater is what it is rated at. I’m not swimming with mine!
Quoth the manual, “It can withstand immersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Prolonged submersion can cause damage to the unit. After submersion, be certain to wipe and air dry the unit before reuse or recharging.” I’ll pass on use during swimming. If you do use it for swimming, let us know how long it lasts ![]()

I like my Forerunner a lot for running but I’m not too sure about it for an MTB trip. The Forerunner is pretty accurate considering how hard it is to figure out long distances perfectly using GPS but it is definitely not as accurate as a bike computer. If you want it for mapping, I know the forerunner has a map function but I have not used it on mine and I don’t think its near as good as a full-size GPS would be. I have a Garmin e-map and I would recommend that over the forerunner any day of the week for real navigating.
