Ford, Technical Service Bulletins and out of warranty repair

My 2004 Explorer has developed a leak in the transmission converter housing area. The vehicle is out of warranty (44k miles) but Ford has issued a TSB for this problem, so it is a known defect. Any idea what Ford’s responsibility is? I am the original owner.

My experience with TSBs is that they’re merely internal documents to make techs aware of a certain (common) problem and how to fix it. Of course they’re not really internal because you can find them all over the 'net – but the point is they don’t create them to notify the public.

With that said, they have no obligation to repair anything for free – that would be a recall. However, depending on your relationship with your dealer, they might help you out in some way…it can’t hurt to ask! Good luck.

My 87 nissan maxima had a tsb for bad fuel injectors that was never a recall. When my mechanic noticed they were the problem with my accelleration issue he called Nissan and they picked up the entire bill.

Be nice but be firm and they will cave.
