My last post failed. Need some help here. I am a 6 to 6:30 IM biker (4 done). Working to improve. I am buying some rollers. Trying to decide what to buy but I do not really understand the wattage references. The chart shows wattage per size roller and additional wattage due to fan or flywheel. I do most of my long rides in the 17 mph. range. 5’11 180 lbs. I have a trainer, but want to add rollers due to the fact I enjoy them and they are not as boring. Also, living in Montana with the long winters, the longer rides just to spin are more challenging on rollers than a trainer. Looking at the wattage chart, for my speeds, what would you suggest for the best combo of roller size and attachments…Thanks Whoops forgot the link
Any suggestions of size roller and add ons…Once again THANKS Kenney
The best value in rollers is the SportCrafters. They manufacture them for CycleOps but they spin balance the drums on their own rollers. You can add on a resistance unit if you feel like you need more load but they’re pretty good on their own unless you’re sprinting.
I’ve been using them for the past 4 years and owned Kreitler DynoMytes before that. Not quite as much resistance as those, due to the slightly larger diameter drum but they work well for me. Quality is just as good as Kreitlers but cost much less. Me, Cat 1 cyclist, usually putting in a IM bike split between 5:05 and 5:25 depending on the course and conditions.
www.SportCrafters.com Small, family owned company that stands behind their product. Great customer service.
If you get the Kreitler Challenger rollers you will need to get the resistance fan too.
I think you’re looking at the chart wrong. It isn’t to help determine the roller diameter needed, it is to help estimate your actual watt output for that particular size. I haven’t ridden rollers since the '80s, but perhaps someone will help with roller diameter vs. comfort.
If you call sportscrafters they may have a refurbished set they can sell you for cheap. Often they post these on ebay but if you call the source you can sometimes get a deal directly. Direct call is how I got mine. They are very well made.
Thanks…Thats great advice, greatly appreiate it. This I will follow…You saved me bucks and as a cat 1 know alot more than me…Thanks again. Kenney
