For those who travel....tips on marking seat post height?

I wanted to see if anyone had come up with a nifty way to ‘lock in’ their seat post height when they travel…beyond just eyballing a mark or tape mark.

I was thinking about putting something, like a ring, around the seat post just above the collar, something fixed, that way when you slap the seat post in you just let it slide right up the ring and the only thing you have to worry about is lining up the saddle nose to the center line…or sideways if you are one of those who like their junk to one side or the other.

Anyone thought of doing this? Or more likely I am the last one to know and there is a product out there for this very thing…

I just use black electrical tape around the post.

I just wrap a piece of electrical tape around the post just above the collar.

i did this on a trip this year but it was with my touring bike. the rear taillight was clamped to my seatpost and it served as a seat height stop.

Agree with the tape thing – I use duct tape – but in addition you might simply want to measure the distance from a specific point point near the top of the seat post and where it enters the tube. Write that down. If you ever inadvertently remove the tape, you’ll always have the measurement. And if you remember it you can always restore it from memory.

Ditto on the electrical tape.

This might be overkill, but I’ve emailed myself some key measurements so that I always have access to my basic fit coordinates. Of course, one could post them on slowtwitch instead, and get the info there.

that’s exactly what i was thinking…just gotta get one and i’m golden. i have to take my seat out every time i ride to get it in the trunk…this will rock!

I can’t imagine why anyone would need anything more than electrical tape.

It couldn’t be any easier or cheaper, and it works great.

I’m sorry but that will add too much weight to your rig

But seriously…you are going to have to take your seat post out to put this on. So you are either going to measure, eye-ball or tape to mark the position in the first place.

Agreed. Good old black electrical tape has served me well for over 20 years. But don’t forget this is triathlon, so it’s somehow supposed to be really complicated, and hard to understand

I use a knife, and put a little scratch on the seatpost.

Yea that could work too, but somehow I just don’t want to intentionally nick my carbon post;)

I used tape for years, but now that I’m taking the seat out on every single ride since I have to drive to the starting area…I have found that the tape is moving. On multiple occasions it has melted and slid down the seat post. The heat index was 104 on Sunday down here in FL and when I put it in the back of the car and went to chow down afterwards it melted with the heat in the trunk…probably 130*. When I pulled it out and put it back in the frame I noticed it had come nearly off.

This nice little clamp will assure me the tape goo won’t melt. It’s just a hassle as I live in the city so I have to drive to all my rides…the seat post comes out WAY more than I would like. Has nothing to do with trying to make something easy…difficult…which I know is a hallmark of triathletes!

I use a pencil or a sharpie. Works every time.

Mark it with electical tape, but when you put the bike together ensure there is an extra 10 mm of height between your marked point and when you actually tighten the clamp so when asiorders post your race picks, guys can say “seat too high”. Otherwise, this is not ST.

Ditto…

Hello ride2eat and All,

Fingernail polish makes an easy to see mark, just a couple of dots.

If it a carbon fiber seatpost don’t forget to have some ‘liquid sandpaper’ (that pink stuff) on hand and put a little goober on the post so it will not slip.

Cheers,

Neal

Yeah, I sweated adding the 7g ;)…but it was worth it to get the @#^#$^ carbon post to stop slipping. The fact that the collar makes resetting the seat post dead easy was just an added bonus.
